this easy diy mask spray makes the whole experience much more pleasant!

Masks.

They are now as much a part of leaving the house as grabbing my car keys.

Ironically, even though we are – as of this post – almost 6 months into this pandemic, it’s only been the past 2 months that I’ve really been wearing my masks so much more frequently. And for longer stretches.

At the beginning, everything was closed and we rarely left the house. But now that restrictions are lifting and more places are opening, we are “out” more and more.

Which means, of course, more and more mask-wearing.

And it’s not the funnest.

But these mask sprays? Make the experience substantially more pleasant.

And they couldn’t be easier.

Simply put 4 – 6 drops of your favorite oil (or a combination) into a small spray bottle (4 – 5ml), add a splash of witch hazel and fill the rest with water. Give a shake and spritz on your mask before each use.

My personal favorite is a blend called Citrus Fresh (a mix of citrus oils + spearmint) but you can use any oil you love to smell. I’ve listed some for you below; what would you use?

Essential oil options:

Lavender, Frankincense: calming

Peppermint: “wake up”

Lemon: uplifting

Thieves: immune support (also great if you love Christmas-y smells!)

Eucalyptus: respiratory support

Love these!!! Where did you get the cute label?

    • sherisilver on September 14, 2020 at 9:40 am

      Thank you! They’re from Avery! 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ rectangular labels!

Brilliant idea to add the oils to a small mister. It certainly makes it easier to carry in your purse. I added your recipe to a post I previously wrote about essential oil uses and I linked to you.

Where did you get the spray bottles? Are they glass or plastic?

    • sherisilver on November 9, 2020 at 9:38 am

Here’s the link: https://rstyle.me/+zpqkey8mqz2RkGY19-Cw4A The bottles are plastic. We typically recommend glass with essential oils but as these are so small you’ll use the spray up quickly. If you’re making a larger spray I like these: https://rstyle.me/+wgEDmszt5qUC3cD4cLvomg They make cute gifts paired with a nice mask! 🙂

      Can you spray directly
On to your face? How much witch hazel?

      • sherisilver on February 2, 2021 at 8:36 am

Best to spray on your mask! As for the witch hazel, I just used a “splash” for the bottle shown. It’s really just to help bind the oils to the water; a little more or less won’t make a difference here!

Can I use ethanol 70% instead of witch hazel?

          • sherisilver on February 4, 2021 at 10:28 am

I’m not sure as I’ve never used ethanol before. I do know that you can swap vodka for the witch hazel!

yes absolutely, that’ll work really well 🙂

I love, thank you! I am wondering why the witch hazel?

    • sherisilver on December 11, 2020 at 1:48 pm

Thank you!!! Witch hazel emulsifies the oil – helps to bind it to the water so that it disperses evenly when you spray!

Thank you! I bought the bottles and am mixing it together together this evening! Thank you for sharing!

Yay! SO glad! What oil(s) did you choose?

  5. Barbara Lee on December 16, 2020 at 11:10 pm

Some are adding glycerin, do you recommend this?

    • sherisilver on December 17, 2020 at 9:33 am

No – no need. The witch hazel is a perfect emulsifier and the glycerin won’t really add anything to the mix!

How much tea tree oil, lavender, and witch hazel do you recommend to add to a 4oz bottle?

    • sherisilver on April 29, 2021 at 8:54 pm

A 4-oz spray is quite large – I’d go with 40 – 60 drops total of essential oils and fill about 1/3 of the way with the witch hazel. You might want to consider a 2-oz bottle unless you think the larger size will be used up relatively quickly. There’s no real “formula”; you can adjust the amount of oils to suit your preference!
