SPRING!

Fresh Room Spray l sherisilver.com

It’s finally here – a few months late, but that seems to be the case every year here in New York.

Opening up the house after it’s been sealed shut all winter is such a joy, and since I’ve ditched toxic products in our home I’ve gathered a few tips on how to naturally – and beautifully – freshen up ALLTHETHINGS.

First up? Diffusing, of course! As a card-carrying scented candle addict I would have told you that you’d have to pry those candles out of my cold, dead fingers before I’d ever give them up.

And then I learned how utterly awful they were. Like, the worst. This article is a great read on why, but basically between the artificial fragrance (considered a “trade secret” so manufacturers don’t have to disclose what’s in it) to the paraffin wax (derived from petroleum, releasing toxins when burned), I could not “unsee” these facts once I learned them. To put it bluntly, toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes.

Diffusing essential oils is cheaper, safer and IMO smells even better. You’re improving the quality of your air as you diffuse and can help with SO many issues – from cooking odors, to sleep, to focus, and even stress.

Next? All-natural furniture and carpet refreshers. These items can definitely use a refresh after a long winter. And all you need are some basic household ingredients and essential oils!

Upholstery spray:
Pour 1/2 cup of vodka into a 16-ounce glass spray bottle. Add 60 drops of essential oil (I love this combo: 25 Lavender, 25 Lemon and 10 Tea Tree; use whatever oils you love!). Swirl to blend and add 1/2 cup distilled water. Shake before each use.

Carpet deodorizer:
Mix 1 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup cornstarch. Add 10 drops of essential oil (any you like; Purification, Tea Tree, Lemongrass and Thieves are faves) and stir to blend. Transfer to a shaker canister and sprinkle onto your carpet. Let sit for 15 – 30 minutes before vacuuming up.

Finally? Room Spray! I LOVE making room sprays, keep them all over the house and switch them up for the season. This is a new fave and perfect for spring. Plug-ins, wax melts and sprays contain artificial fragrance, which you are now spraying into the air and inhaling into your system (download the Think Dirty app to scan your products, and watch “Stink” on Amazon Prime to learn more about the hidden dangers of fragrance).

End of the school year is upon us and these make an easy and lovely teacher/coach/tutor gift!

I don’t see a “shop” link to purchase anything. Can you please tell me how to purchase the car diffusers?
    Thank you

Pretty diffuser! Wish I’d known how toxic most essential oils are to cats. Unfortunately, I learned after quite an investment. I love all these ideas and sad that I didn’t see that information in any of the many, many fun essential oil projects on Pinterest.

Hi Sheri, my cousin Nancy Clemens just sent me your link and said that you had two of the car diffusers left. Can you give me more information on them? Nancy has one in her car and it is so darn cute!
    Thank you, Rochelle 🙂
