make & gift these easy plantable pots for earth day!

Earth Day is April 22nd – which is this Saturday – and you can have these paper pots ready to gift in less than an hour!

I love a diy that is easy, attractive and requires minimal “stuff”!

In a survey I did last fall I was surprised to learn how many of you enjoy my DIY’s. I’m a food blogger first and foremost, yet you clearly like the crafty side of me too! So I’ve been trying to post at least one DIY every month, and with Earth Day coming up I wanted to tie that into the DIY theme!

And you know if I’m sharing a DIY that it will be easy, attractive and needing minimal tools, supplies or equipment.

I also love anything to do with plants!

My background in gardening and garden design naturally leads me to plant-y types of crafts and projects. And Earth Day is probably where my “green” creative ideas are at their best! Take a look at some of my past posts:

seed pots make adorable little baskets!

These charming plantable pots are easily crafted from seedling pots made from biodegradable peat fiber. Peat pots also look attractive and rustic, and I love the way these came together!

what materials do you need to make them?

Here’s what I used to create these plantable pots:

  • peat fiber pot – a biodegradable pot can be planted directly into a planter or garden bed, automatically degrading into the soil. The roots will grow right through the pots, which eliminates transplant shock.
  • scissors – to cut the shape of your basket!
  • plant – this will vary depending on where you live. It’s still early spring in New York so I chose these sweet violas. Other great options include herbs, small bulbs or tiny succulents. Really, anything small enough to fit in the pot!
  • potting soil – depending on the size of your plant you made need to add some soil to fill in the basket.
  • paper wrapped floral wire – I had a bunch of this from the baskets I made a while back – it’s perfect for this project but you could use any flexible wire you like!
  • 1/8″ hole puncher – this is my go-to puncher for making smaller holes!
  • sheet moss – sheet moss provides a decorative finish and keeps the soil in place – not necessary but a nice touch!

how do you make them?

Check out the video, below, to see how I make these baskets – they are so easy!

Start by pinching the top of the pot closed, and then cut an arched shape from one side to the other.

Punch a hole on either side of the basket and thread your floral wire through to form a handle.

Pull off any tightly bound roots from your plant and gently open up the roots that remain. Place into your pot and fill with more soil if necessary.

Top with sheet moss!

These little pots are easy enough for even young children to help with, and you could even hang a little tag from the wire if giving as a gift. This would be a sweet something to give to neighbors, teachers, friends, or anyone whose day you’d like to brighten up this Earth Day!

Let me know if you make them!
