my hair takes a LOT of abuse!

i’ve stopped coloring – but have a lot more grays!

As many of you have noticed (and commented on), I am letting my gray hair grow in (or is it out? I’m never sure). About 2 years ago I started experimenting with about a 2″ piece around my face, just to see what the color looked like. As that piece grew and grew I loved the way it looked but kept coloring the rest of my hair as usual.

And then 2020 happened. And I went 6 months with no color. My hair grows very fast so there was a LOT of new gray coming in, and now all over. And I kind of loved it. Of course I didn’t love the “line” that was now present (especially in the back when I dared looked in a double mirror – THE HORROR), but that was easily fixed by my magical hairdresser. I go every few months for low lights to “blur” the line of demarcation between old and new color, and we’re going to keep on keeping on.

Of course, gray hair is quite different in almost every way, and can have a tendency to look and feel more brittle and dull. Add to this the straightening treatments I get a few times a year, those aforementioned low lights, and regular blow drying and I knew I had to step up my hair care regimen.

did you know that essential oils can help your hair??

I’d already discovered – by accident – the benefits of Rosemary and Lavender essential oils when I made my dry shampoo. Although I only used the spray every few days I noticed that my hair started feeling and looking healthier and shinier. I did a little research and learned that those specific oils are amazing for supporting hair health.

i SWEAR by this supplement for hair and nail growth!

The first thing I did when I decided to level up my hair care was to start taking Sulfurzyme – a Young Living supplement that is a key source of sulfur. It provides generous quantities of collagen and keratin, which is vital for healthy hair, skin and nails.

why you need mermaid spray!

And while I love my dry shampoo it was not something I was looking to spray all over my hair every day – especially on days that I wash it. Which is when I came across mermaid spray!

what is in mermaid spray?

I don’t know ANYONE who has made this spray and not absolutely loved it – and I am now one of those people. It is similar to the dry shampoo, with the addition of Cedarwood and Peppermint, and no arrowroot powder – just witch hazel and water.

Lavender essential oil – supports hair health and growth, as well as moisturizing and strengthening.

Rosemary essential oil – increases blood circulation (which stimulates hair follicles) and is one of the best oils you can use for hair growth.

Cedarwood essential oil – increases blood circulation (which stimulates hair follicles) and stimulates the scalp.

Peppermint essential oil – reduces hair loss by strengthening roots and increasing blood flow – a must-have oil for postpartum hair loss.

why is everyone obsessed with this spray??

I seriously noticed a difference the first time I used it – my hair felt softer and less fragile, and it’s only gotten better over time. You can use it on wet or dry hair; I like to spray it all over towel-dried hair and then use a wet brush to brush it through. I had postpartum hair loss after Noah and wish I had known about this then – it’s amazing for helping hair bounce back.

It’s a great detangler too, so if you’ve got kiddos with long, thick or “tangly” hair you will love it – and it’s plant-based and free of chemicals!

Let me know if you try it! If you’d like to purchase these oils I’ve created a “healthy hair” bundle so that you can grab them at wholesale pricing and get started right away!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Instructions

  • Add the oils to your bottle. Fill halfway with the witch hazel and top with water. Shake before each use.
  • Spray on damp or dry hair and brush through.

Notes

  1. It is important to use alcohol-free witch hazel on your hair, to prevent over drying (and undoing all the benefits of the oils you're applying).
  2. As there are no funky emulsifiers in your spray the essential oils will settle as it sits - this is totally normal; simply shake before each use to blend!
  3. You can double the recipe and place in a 4-ounce spray bottle!
