DIY dry shampoo spray is quick, easy and the BEST I’ve ever used!
OBSESSED with this DIY dry shampoo spray – it’s perfect!
why I use dry shampoo!
I spend a lot of time, effort and money on my hair. I get it colored, I get it straightened, and I blow dry it every single day. And even though I’m super old, I still struggle with oily hair. So it’s rough for me to skip a day of shampooing, even though I know it’s best for all the above reasons.
Which is why I rely heavily on dry shampoo. Dry shampoo works by absorbing excess oil, “refreshing” the hair and allowing you to stretch the time between shampoos. I was shocked to see that I have written about dry shampoo no less than THREE times on these pages – and that doesn’t even cover all the brands I’ve tried that I didn’t write about.
And at the end of the day they all work pretty much the same – regardless of the price. Meaning, they all do a pretty good job at absorbing excess oil but always wind up leaving a coating on my hair that I’m not thrilled with.
why i LOVE this diy dry shampoo!
I’d never bothered making my own dry shampoo because most homemade dry shampoo recipes are for a powder – which I find annoying and messy to work with. But when I found this recipe for a spray version I knew I had to try it.
Guys – this is hands-down the BEST dry shampoo I’ve ever used. THE BEST. It smells amazing, is all natural, contains no toxic ingredients and really, really works. What I love most about it is that it leaves my hair feeling like hair, without that weird coating.
And because it’s not a dry shampoo powder it’s a LOT easier to use, with no mess or white residue.
what do you need to make your own dry shampoo spray?
You need just a few simple ingredients – all linked in the recipe:
distilled water
witch hazel – helps to emulsify, or “bind” the oils to the water
arrowroot powder – absorbs excess oil
Lavender essential oil – supports hair health and growth, as well as moisturizing and strengthening
Rosemary essential oil – increases blood circulation (which stimulates hair follicles) and is one of the best oils you can use for hair growth
how do you use this spray?
Easy! Simply shake to blend (the arrowroot powder will settle as the spray sits) and spray along your hairline – brush it through.
Let me know if you try it, and if you love it as much as I do!

Thank you for this amazing hack, would really love to try it! I have a dandruff-prone scalp and I used Nicci Skin Care’s Healthy Scalp Shampoo for treating dandruff. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a natural dandruff shampoo which treats and soothes the scalp at the same time.
Can this be used on dark hair?
Yes! That’s what I love about it, that it doesn’t leave a residue. Just give it a good shake as the powder will settle between uses!
Unfortunately this recipe didn’t work for me. I even added less essential oil drops because I thought 10 drops of each would be too much. I added 3 drops of each, witch hazel, and cornstarch in distilled water. My hairline is now more oily than it was before I used this recipe. But, I’m going to use it on my dry ends instead. Also, since my partner’s curly hair gets very dry, I’m going to see if the spray will tame his frizz. 🙂 Thank you.
Wow – I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you! I have a VERY oily scalp and this works like a dream for me! I suppose everyone responds differently!
This didn’t work for me either. The spray came out wet, any suggestions?
It is a wet spray – I mist it through my roots and brush it through – I find that it dries quickly and absorbs any excess oil. I’ll usually run the blow dryer over and it works for me! I hope this helps!
Worked beautifully, was wet ofcourse to start but then used a couple of Velcro rollers…. Magic
Thankyou 1st class tip
Yay! So glad – one of my very favorites!
Is this good for a senior with colored hair. Can you use rubbing alcohol in place of witch hazel?
This is very gentle so you’ll be fine! I wouldn’t put alcohol in my hair so try to stick with the witch hazel!
Can you please explain how the wet formula acts as a dry shampoo?
Good question! 🙂 As you run it through your hair after spraying you’ll notice it dries very quickly due to the arrowroot powder!
Maybe I’m missing it- but do you discuss the shelf life of this product? I’ve read that a water based dry shampoo spray with these specific ingredients can breed bacteria/mold within days – weeks. Do you have any recommendations for that?
Hi! I do not address it in the post – the truth is that I go through it so quickly that it’s not an issue for me. Of course if you are concerned you could do a few different things: 1.keep it in the fridge, 2.make a smaller batch, 3.use a traditional preservative (ptiphen, Germaben, Leucidal Complete). Let me know what you decide!
