essential oil air fresheners are easy, inexpensive, and they WORK!
These essential oil air fresheners solved a few problems.
Although I love my diffusers and room sprays, not every spot is suitable for a diffuser, and room sprays are temporary.
I wanted a solid air freshener that I could pop into different spots, leave them there, and not have to worry about plugging in/refilling/etc. Think bathroom/powder room, entryway, garage, laundry room, linen closet.
I did a little research and landed on this easy recipe!
You’ll need jars, cheesecloth (or “frogs”), gelatin, potassium sorbate, vodka and of course essential oils. Many recipes I found used salt as a preservative (the last thing you want is mold growing on your air freshener!), but potassium sorbate is much more effective and won’t dissolve the gel.
This recipe makes enough for (4) 4-ounce or (2) 8-ounce mason jars. You can experiment with what you have; just make sure the jar has a wide mouth so that more of the scent comes through.
And feel free to experiment with your favorite oils! I’ve listed some nice combinations at the bottom of the recipe but use what you love (and share any that you make)!

from A Life Adjacent
1 cup room temperature water
2 packets gelatin (about 2 tablespoons)
1/4 teaspoon potassium sorbate
1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup vodka
40 drops (total) essential oils*
If you are making different scents for each jar, put the combo on a piece of masking tape and stick on the jar before filling (after the gel has set I put the tape on the bottom of the jar for future reference).
Pour the room temperature water into a small pot and sprinkle the gelatin over. Let stand for 10 minutes (the mixture will swell up as shown in the above image). Place the pot over medium heat and whisk till the gelatin is dissolved. Let cool 5 minutes and transfer to a large Pyrex measuring cup.
Add the potassium sorbate and stir till dissolved. Add the cold water and vodka and stir again. Pour into your jar(s) and add your oils, stirring to thoroughly incorporate. Refrigerate till set, about 3 hours.
To cover the jars, use a frog or a piece of cheesecloth (held in place by the jar’s ring).
The scent has been lasting me about a month (remember, there are no artificial preservatives here, so these fresheners won’t last as long as traditional ones). To rehydrate the gel, make a room spray with the same oils and spray. OR you can mix 1 – 2 tablespoons of vodka with the oils and pour into the jar.
