essential oil cough drops

making your own all-natural essential oil cough drops is easier than you think!

If you’ve never thought about making your own essential oil cough drops – well, SAME.

I continue to be amazed at the many ways to use essential oils – and the many benefits they provide. This is the time of year when I tend to get that tickly/scratchy/annoying sensation in my throat, and I typically turn to cough drops to soothe (though I’ve also turned to cough syrup. and popsicles. and lemonade.).

I’d never made my own before, and frankly why would I? But I found this recipe that I copied over a long time ago (and now can’t find the source – if you find it please let me know!), and thought I’d give it a whirl – adding, of course, essential oils!

These drops are very easy to make and use ingredients that you probably have on-hand. You can make them a number of ways, which I listed in the recipe, but I was smitten with making little wells out of confectioner’s sugar (I’m weird). Next time I’ll probably use these silicone molds as it would simplify the process – but I would still recommend tossing the drops with some powdered sugar to prevent sticking.

You can also swap out the essential oils I used for your favorite combination. Lavender, Peppermint, Cinnamon and any citrus oil would be great here, but I love the immune support of Thieves and Lemon oils.

And in advance of the comments I will receive that these are really candy/SO MUCH CONFECTIONER’S SUGAR/I’m not a doctor – yes, yes and YES. But I made these drops this week because I felt a tickle in my throat, and I have to say that they are seriously soothing – which is the whole point of cough drops IMHO. I think these would make a sweet gift too, packed up in a little jar and paired with a pretty tin of tea – who wouldn’t appreciate that?

One more thing – I go HARD on my essential oils. If you are new to using them or are using an oil in a new way for this recipe, start with half the total amount shown – especially with the spicier oils like Cinnamon and Peppermint. You can always add more next time!

Essential Oil Cough Drops

confectioner’s sugar
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon honey
20 drops Thieves Vitality essential oil
20 drops Lemon Vitality oil

Line a small baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Cover liberally with confectioner’s sugar and make depressions using a bottle cap or small spoon (I used the cap from the essential oil bottle, shown).* Lightly spray a 1-cup spouted measure with a bit of non-stick cooking spray; wipe out the excess.

Combine the sugar, water and honey in a small saucepan and clip on a thermometer. Cook over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar is dissolved. When the temperature reaches 280 degrees add the essential oils. Continue cooking until the temperature reaches 300 degrees and transfer to your prepared measuring cup. Let sit till the bubbling subsides.

Work quickly to pour the mixture into each depression. Let sit till the drops completely harden, then transfer to a strainer to sift out the excess sugar, making sure that the drops are completely coated to prevent sticking. Store in an airtight container.

*Alternatively you can use a silicone mold or even just pour the mixture in small dropfuls onto a piece of parchment paper.
