these knit hat ornaments are as easy as they are totally adorable!
The minute – the SECOND – I saw these little knit hat ornaments I had to check out the instructions. I was not overly optimistic as I don’t knit OR sew, so I was prepared to pass them by.
But in true holiday miracle fashion they required neither knitting NOR sewing, and were even easier than I could have imagined!
Yay!
All you need is any kind of yarn and a cardboard tube.
Seriously.
Most instructions I found suggested using a cotton ball or some crumpled up tissue paper to give the cap shape, but I used a wool felt ball so that it could also act as a little diffuser!
Ready to make one? Here’s what you do:
1. Cut any cardboard tube into rings that are between 3/4″ and 1″ (the slightly larger one in the pictures is the 1″ size – I personally preferred the 3/4″ size). I used the tube from a roll of gift wrap but you can use any cardboard tube you have.
2. Cut several 12″ lengths of yarn – I needed about 16 pieces for these hats, but I was using a pretty thick yarn and a narrow tube – adjust the amounts you need accordingly.
3. Take one piece of yarn, fold it in half and place it through your cardboard ring, loop on the top as shown:
4. Now take the ends and bring them over the outside of the tube and through the loop:
5. Pull the ends back down so that the loop is on the bottom of the tube:
6. Repeat, going all the way around the tube and making sure to keep the pieces packed tightly so that the cardboard doesn’t show through.
Doesn’t it look like a little squid???
7. Now you’re going to pull all of those ends through the center of the tube – the easiest way to do it is to twist them all up together and push the bunch through.
8. Use your thumbs to push through and make sure that all the pieces are completely through the other side, then take another piece of yarn to tie them together:
9. Now give the ends a trim till you have a pleasing “pompom” shape – don’t worry about it being perfect!
To give the hat shape and support, stuff a cotton ball, stuffing or wadded up tissue paper inside. To make the hat into a diffuser, loop a piece of cotton string through a wool felt ball and pull it through the hat. The string can then be used to hang on a tree or adorn a gift! Add your favorite essential oils right on the ball!
I LOVE the way these came out! And I really love that they use bits and pieces of things you have lying around the house, are inexpensive and easy enough for anyone to make!
Let me know if you try this and send me a picture too! xo

What kind of circular needles would work and what size.? I would so appreciate a chart like the heart pattern shown. Would it be possible to receive a chart or is there one on your site?
I didn’t use a needle to make these so I’m not sure what you’re referring to! I don’t have a chart; just the step-by-step photos! Let me know what you need!
Have seen lots of tutorials on these, but this is the first with the diffuser. Love that idea.
Thank you so much – they were a big hit! 🙂
