homemade paper envelopes!

All you need is a piece of paper to make these easy homemade paper envelopes!

I can’t stop making these little envelopes!

One of my most popular posts from last year were these cardboard tube gift boxes:

I had  so much fun making them and apparently you did too! I’m always looking for easy, no-fuss crafts to share, especially around the holidays, and it literally does NOT get easier than these little envelopes!

In addition to being oh-so-very-simple, all you need is a square piece of paper to make them!

I’ve posted a video, below, but let’s break it down step by step:

You’ll start with a piece of paper that is square or cut into a square shape. Turn it upside down so that the inside of the envelope is facing up, and fold in half diagonally:

This is a double sided piece of paper and I wanted the larger dots to show on the outside of the envelope. Once you’ve folded the paper, open it up and fold the left point into the center, creasing the edge as shown:

Fold again so that the center crease is now the left edge:

Fold the bottom point up toward the center and the top point over it, adjusting so that both sides are even:

Now fold that top point back on itself:

You’ll then take that little triangle, fold it back and open it up to make a diamond shape:

This diamond is the pocket that you’ll tuck the flap of the envelope into. Fold the right flap in toward the center and tuck the point into the pocket:

And there’s your envelope!

It took me a few tries to “get it” but once you do it’s a piece of cake to make. And obviously the sky’s the limit here!

I used a few random pieces of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper that I had from Michael’s, wrapping paper and some kraft paper. The striped envelope is printer paper that I decorated with washi tape before I started folding.

You can use stickers, crayons, watercolors, paint pens, whatever you like!

Sizing can vary too – you’ll need to start with a piece of paper that’s twice as long as the widest side of whatever is going inside. For a standard gift card, an 8 x 8 piece of paper will work perfectly.

Let me know if you try this!
