yarn pumpkins

yarn pumpkins are adorable and so easy to make!

I could not resist making these yarn pumpkins – and they really are SO easy! No knitting skills are required, and this is a perfect kids’ craft too!

And you barely need any supplies to get started – some foam pumpkins, yarn and (optional but oh so cute) cinnamon sticks!

I bought two bags of assorted foam pumpkins from Amazon, though Dollar Tree-type stores and craft stores often carry them too.

I bought the yarn on major sale at Michaels – again, lots of stores carry inexpensive yarns, often on clearance. Keep in mind that the thicker the yarn, the cuter the result (and quicker to make too!).

For the “stems”, you can leave a bit of the yarn poking out the top (as I did in a few), insert a cinnamon stick or just go outside and grab a few branches. I was planning on dropping some fall fave essential oils on mine, and wanted the scent of the cinnamon sticks to go with.

Petite pumpkins make sweet gift toppers (kind of like those knit hat ornaments I made last year), and I bet would look adorable strung as a garland too!

Yarn Pumpkins

assorted foam pumpkins (I used these and these)
chunky yarn (I used this yarn, in “Biscotti” and “Copper Coins”, which gave me multiple colors to choose from!)
cinnamon sticks and/or twigs and branches (optional)
essential oils (optional)

Remove the stems and “core” the centers of your pumpkins – I used this apple corer because I had it on hand but a paring knife will work too.

Cut a generous length of yarn and start threading it through the center of one pumpkin, through the bottom, up along the outside and back through the center. As you work around you’ll find a chopstick or pencil helpful in pushing the yarn through the center.

When there is no pumpkin peeking through the yarn, tuck the end in (or let a little peek out for a “stem”) and push a cinnamon stick or twig in the top. Continue with your remaining pumpkins and place in a basket or bowl, or in a row on a mantle. Drop some essential oils on the yarn for a “diffuser” (click here for my favorite fall oils for diffusing!).
