I cannot remember the last time I had a cough. Sure I get that twice yearly change-of-season cold, and an occasional sinus infection or tickly throat – but a real, honest-to-goodness cough? Years.
But a wicked cough ran through our entire family recently and I was VERY happy that I had bookmarked this recipe from The Kitchn, published many years ago.
It consists of nothing more than bourbon, honey and lemon, but when heated up and consumed – slowly, and preferably under a pile of blankets on the couch – it has a truly restorative effect.
Amounts below are suggested, so adjust accordingly – and of course see your doctor if your symptoms persist. And I’m not saying that you could just as easily whip this up when you’re NOT sick.
Grown Up Cough Syrup
from The Kitchn
2 ounces bourbon
2 ounces water
1 – 2 ounces fresh lemon juice (from 1/2 – 1 whole lemon)
1 tablespoon honey
Place the bourbon, water and lemon juice into a tumbler – heat for 45 seconds in the microwave. Add the honey, whisk to combine and heat for 30 – 45 seconds more. Sip slowly.
