my five favorite everlane pieces perfect for spring!

my five favorite everlane pieces perfect for spring!

I’m obsessed with these five favorite pieces from Everlane – perfect for spring!

excited to share a new series – “five favorites”

I’m so excited to be partnering with my good friend Annie – from the beautiful blog Most Lovely Things – on a new post series called “five favorites”!

As the name implies, we’ll be picking five favorites and sharing them with you. And after perusing Everlane’s new spring arrivals we had to start there!

how would you describe your style?

My style has definitely evolved over the years – especially as I’ve gotten older. I used to call my aesthetic “tomboy chic“, but I would now more accurately describe it as “elevated basics”. Which Everlane is CRUSHING this spring!

what are “elevated basics”?

If you were to look at my closet you would see: a) not a ton of clothing, thanks to the capsule wardrobe model I adopted years ago, and b) repeats of just a few basic styles:

  • button-down shirt with a slim cut
  • fitted short-sleeved tee shirt with a slightly longer sleeve
  • colorful ballet or Mary Jane flat
  • wide legged pant
  • chunky-yet-trim sweater

It does not get more basic than this list, yet I’m always looking for a detail that elevates each item to make it stand out just a bit. It could be in the cut, color, or the fabric.

Staying in this lane allows me to feel “age appropriate” yet stylish at the same time! And this theme was strong in the Everlane spring collection. Everlane is one of my favorite brands, with high quality basics that suit my personal style perfectly. I typically think of them for basics like tee shirts and jeans, but what impressed me about the spring collection was the range of more “special” pieces that had the kind of detailing that I always covet.

dressing for spring can be a challenge in New York!

Transitional weather dressing in spring and fall can be the most challenging – it can be cool or even cold in the morning and then heat up considerably by midday. The five pieces I’m sharing with you in today’s post can take you through the current season right into the warm weather. Working in the capsule wardrobe format means that transitional pieces like these are the backbone of my closet, as they give me the most options for outfits.

Each of these five pieces made the cut by meeting the following three criteria:

  • elevated basic – The “basic” is a closet staple that will be evergreen regardless of trends. As my style is pretty consistent I know what that looks like right away. The “elevated” is a detail (or two) that takes that basic up a notch (or two), to make it stand out just enough to make the item feel a little bit special.
  • transitional – I really do try to stretch every item I purchase into a minimum of two, if not three, seasons. Basic pieces in my minimal wardrobe need to do double and triple duty, whether alone or as a layering piece.
  • quality – I no longer tolerate ‘disposable’ clothing. Having few items in my closet means those items get more wear and more rotation – so they have to hold up. A great staple to me is more than just a good looking item, but one that will also last more than a couple of years.

Let’s take a look at what made the cut for my spring wardrobe (Note: all items except those noted are regular fit, and I got my normal size):

raglan sleeve poplin dress

everlane black poplin dress

I was MAJORLY on the fence about this one – especially since there is often the most disparity with dresses between the website version and how they look in real life. But the lightweight fabric and breezy cut looked perfect for warmer weather so I gave it a try. A dress can be the easiest way to look pulled together with minimal effort and I had high hopes for this one.

There’s much to love about this dress. It has a tie waist that I like to tie in the back for a loosely fitted look. The split neck is not too deep and the gathered shoulders are a nice detail. The midi length is my favorite for dresses and POCKETS!

easy canvas pant

everlane ivory cotton pants with black button down shirt

It’s worth noting that this was the last item I tried on and didn’t take them off the rest of the day – they were that comfortable. These pants are a perfect example of a great casual piece that can also dress up. I paired them here with a classic button down and sandals, but could easily see them thrown over a bathing suit at the beach on a hot day, or with sneakers and a tee shirt and denim jacket. The ivory color is a subtle difference that means more versatility, as you can pair them with white tops without looking like the ice cream man.

wide leg pant

everlane black pants with white tee shirt

It’s no secret that I’m a pants girl. And while I’ve had my share of skinny jeans, cargo pants, joggers, etc., my true love is a wide leg. And these are perfect, especially if you are curious about trying this style but don’t want to go too extreme. These are incredibly flattering pants, with a high waist and heavier material. I love the cropped length, too, and though I went with black they come in a nice range of different colors!

cotton sweater

A cotton sweater is as much a staple for me as a denim jacket. The right cut and material will ensure that it’s just as versatile and this one is all that. I love the straight cut, as it floats slightly away from the body which is most flattering IMO. And the knit is heavy enough to serve as a cover over a tee shirt or dress, but light enough to be a base layer under a blazer or trench. I can easily see throwing this over a pair of white jeans or a slip skirt (or even a swimsuit!) all summer long!

day twist sandal

everlane twist leather sandals

If there ever was a perfect summer sandal than these are it! I am forever on the hunt for a summer sandal that I can just live in. Comfortable, stylish and as cute with jeans as they are with a skirt or dress. I’ll never give up my flip flops and Birks but always need a nice sandal, and these are a fashionable yet classic style to last beyond a few seasons.

bonus picks!

I’m including two more items that I ordered and loved – they didn’t make the list because I’m not sure they’d qualify as everyone’s idea of a “basic”, yet they really stood out for me style-wise:

gardener jean

everlane garden pants with black button down shirt

Not gonna lie – I couldn’t order these fast enough. I loved everything about these pants, from the wide wide leg to the utility-style stitching and oversized pockets. These pants are the epitome of an elevated basic, with enough attention to detail to make them stand out without looking too “of the moment” trendy.

checkered trench

everlane checkered trench coat

I have had the same classic trench, bought from Madewell about a million years ago. It has held up beautifully and I’ve never felt the need to replace it or to add an additional trench to my wardrobe. But this beauty caught my eye and since I was ordering anyway I added it to my cart.

I absolutely loved the style, quality and small-yet-special details. What I would definitely recommend is going one size down from your usual size, as it felt like a lot of coat. If you’ve purchased this I’d love to know what you think!

This is a perfect time to shop Everlane as they are having a great sale on so many of their staple items; here are some of my picks from the sale section:

  • liner coat – this trend seems to be staying and I’m here for it. If you’re not familiar, a liner coat can be worn on its own or as a liner under a coat for extra warmth. Coats are one of my favorite ways to add a pop of color to my very neutral palette and I love this bright orange!
  • cozy sweatshirt – much as I try to fight it, I find that there are times when only a cozy sweatshirt will do. And this one is super cozy, with an oversized fit perfect for lounging around the house!
  • leather ballet flat – this is a signature item from Everlane, and with good reason. Buttery soft and so comfortable, this pretty shade is actually super versatile, going with pretty much anything you pair it with!
  • cloud turtleneck – I have this in the ivory color and live in it. SO SO soft, long enough to wear with leggings, but really cute with joggers or jeans!

Are you an Everlane fan? Which pieces did you like best? Let me know what you buy, and what some of your favorites are! And don’t forget to check out Annie’s post with her picks – we purposely didn’t share what we got with each other so I’m excited to see what she got!
