I’m so proud to be sharing about Moms for Moms today!
Today is Giving Tuesday and I couldn’t imagine a more perfect time to share this post about Moms for Moms.
From the time I moved out on my own I have regularly sought opportunities to volunteer. I’ve had a very lucky life, as have my children, and – especially since becoming a mom – I am so acutely aware of the struggles that so many mothers and children have. Which is why I was so excited to connect with the amazing women at Moms for Moms, and why I am sharing their mission – and asking for your help – today.
Danielle Krupa – the daughter of a struggling single mother who worked hard to provide the basic necessities needed to survive – founded Moms for Moms in 2014 to help provide single mothers with the critical pre- and post-natal essentials they need and deserve.
Moms for Moms is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit that provides diapers, wipes, infant clothing, baby bottles, blankets, feminine care products, self care items and more, through care kits and baby bundles distributed to mothers across NYC.
Some basic facts:
- 1 in 4 children in the US under the age of 18 are raised by single mothers. Nearly half (45%) of those families live below the poverty line.
- Over 4 million women live in NYC and approximately 1.6 million are single mothers living in poverty. There is ZERO federal assistance when it comes to postpartum and newborn essentials. In fact, women receiving SNAP/WIC benefits CANNOT USE THEM TO PURCHASE DIAPERS.
- According to the MIT living wage calculator, the amount necessary to meet BASIC needs for a single parent with one child – including housing, food, child care and health insurance, in addition to other regular costs – is $65,000 in NY. The average single mother makes only $25,000 per year.
Danielle said it best so I will quote her here:
“Becoming a mother is the hardest job in the world, even if you have everything. Imagine if you had nothing”.
I couldn’t reach out fast enough and know that so many of you will feel the same.
So how can you help? It couldn’t be easier:
1. Click this link and add items to your shopping cart.
2. Select the “Moms for Moms NYC Inc’s Gift Registry Address” as the shipping address.
3. Complete your order! The wonderful volunteers organize, sort and put the beautiful bundles together for distribution.
We all want to help, do more, do better – but life gets busy and it can be hard to know where to begin. This mission resonated with me so strongly because I know how lucky I was to have a partner to help me, and the means to get whatever I needed. I truly can’t imagine what it would be like to be alone, and without the ability to purchase basic necessities for myself and my baby.
I’m putting all the links right here; feel free to reach out directly, reach out to me, share on your socials, etc. I have the most wonderful, giving readers and know that you will feel as strongly as I do.
Thank you! xo
