vampire doughnuts!

vampire doughnuts are not hard and NOT scary!

Been wanting to make these for a LONG time.

And while you could certainly use store bought glazed doughnuts, making doughnuts from my old pal canned biscuit dough is so easy – and you get the doughnut holes and customizable colors to boot.

WINNING!

Seriously, just whip up a batch of biscuit doughnuts (remember these? these? and these?), dip in glaze and attach candy eyes and plastic fangs.

A crowd pleaser if there ever was one, and the perfect treat for tiny hands to help!

I posted a BTS video for Pinterest and IG reels if you’d like to take a peek, and links to all the goods (as well as a few helpful tips!) are right in the recipe.

Let me know if you make these, and tag me on Instagram @sherisilver if you do!

Vampire Doughnuts

vegetable oil, for frying
1 can (8 biscuits) refrigerated biscuit dough*
1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar
3 – 5 tablespoons milk or water
gel food coloring (I used Wilton “Leaf Green”, “Violet” and “Sky Blue”)
candy eyes (I used these and these)
plastic “fangs

Set a wire rack over a baking sheet. Heat 2″ of vegetable oil in a large pot or pan, to a temperature of 350 degrees (Tip! If you don’t have a candy thermometer, place a popcorn kernel in the oil before you turn the heat on. When the popcorn pops the oil is at the correct temperature!).

Separate the biscuits and cut small circles out of the center using a small knife or cookie cutter; place on the wire rack.

Working with a few biscuits at a time (don’t crowd the pan), place in the oil and fry till golden brown. Flip to fry the other side (I use two forks) and return to the wire rack to cool completely.

Divide the confectioner’s sugar among three bowls. Working with one bowl at a time, add a tablespoon of milk and whisk. Add more milk, a bit at a time, till a thick yet pourable consistency is achieved. Use a toothpick to add one of the food colors, stirring and adding more color as needed till the desired shade is achieved. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.

Dip the tops of the doughnuts into the glaze, allowing the excess to drip off, and return to the wire rack. To place the fangs, insert them “closed” and then slowly open them up once placed. Add candy eyes and let set completely.

*If you go with store bought doughnuts, be sure to go with the yeast-risen kind, not the cake variety – which will break when you insert the fangs!
