sensory play dough!

sensory play dough is easy to make and a perfect “anytime” activity!

Now that we’re getting back to being “in-person” I’ve been enjoying connecting with people with live classes again – there’s nothing like interacting face-to-face and I look forward to the end (or at least lessening) of zoom meetings.

I have an upcoming make-and-take geared for young families and thought it would be fun to include a sensory play dough recipe in the class.

So what exactly is sensory play? Simply put it includes any activity that stimulates the 5 senses – touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. It can also include movement and balance.

If you think about play dough it checks several of those boxes, along with being wonderful for creativity, muscle strength and fine motor skills. Adding in essential oils amplifies the experience even more, which is why I was excited to try my hand at a homemade recipe!

I played around with a few and landed on the one I’ve shared here – it’s no-fuss, super soft and easy to work with. You can leave it white or add food coloring; I like to add color that corresponds to the oil.

What oils are good for sensory play? Obviously the sky’s the limit but when dealing with kids I like to keep it simple. Here are my faves:

Lemon, Orange or any citrus oil

Peppermint

Peace & Calming

Lavender

The number of drops will vary, depending on the amount of play dough you’re working with and personal preference. Start low and add more if needed.

Sensory Play Dough

2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups boiling water
food coloring (I like these!)
essential oils

Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar on low speed just to blend. Add the vegetable oil and 1 cup of the boiling water. Mix till smooth and add the remaining 1/2 cup – a bit at a time – till dough is very soft and pliable (I find that I have to add the entire 1/2 cup).

At this point the play dough is ready to use. If you’d like to color it, divide into as many shades as you like and work the color in till you reach your desired shade. Add essential oils, a few drops at a time.

Store in a ziploc bag or airtight container.
