these modern cereal wreaths are CHARMING!
I’m tickled pink (and blue and green and purple) by these modern cereal wreaths!
We’ve not had a Christmas tree since moving to our new house – with the big kids out of the house and no real spot for it here, it just seemed time. That said, Noah has had a little artificial tree which he adores bringing out each year, so we indulge. It mostly has his collection of ornaments but there are a few that he’s adopted from my collection – my favorite being this one:
I don’t even remember where it came from, but every year when I see it I want to do “something” inspired by its modern feel.
And that’s how these happened!
Cornflake wreaths have been around forever (the recipe is basically a riff on a rice krispies treat) – I used to make them every year when Chelsea and Conor were little, and after snacking on a few I’d let them harden and then hang them on our tree. I decided to try and make a modern version, with multicolored balls in place of the green cornflakes. I had seen a version using Kix cereal and dying the marshmallow, but those wreaths were monotone – and I really wanted them to be multicolor like mine.
And then I came across this!
And they came out just as I’d hoped.
I happened to have a small jar of pink candy pearls that matched perfectly, and added just the right touch.
Let me know if you make ’em!
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
10 ounces marshmallows
red food coloring (optional)
5 cups Cap’N Crunch Oops! All Berries Cereal*
candy pearls (optional)
Line a baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir till completely melted. Add one drop of red food coloring if using, and stir to incorporate. Remove from heat.
Stir in the cereal gently but quickly, till well-coated. Spray your hands with non-stick cooking spray and take about 2 tablespoons of the mixture out of the pot. Place on your baking sheet and form a circle, making a hole in the center till you have a wreath shape. Repeat with remaining mixture, spraying your hands as needed to keep them from sticking. If using candy pearls place 3 – 5 on each wreath. Allow to set completely before removing; add string or yarn to use as ornaments.
*If you prefer to use Kix, simply divide the ingredients into as many colors as you’d like – dye the marshmallow/butter mixture to your desired shade and proceed with the recipe above.
