prosciutto wrapped figs

prosciutto wrapped figs are easy, elegant, delicious and SO very Roman!

I’m SUPER excited to be sharing this dish of prosciutto-wrapped figs – mainly because it gives me the chance to talk about Rome.

Rome has my heart!

Rome is, to me, where my heart lies. If you told me that I could get on a plane and go to one place, I would pick Rome. If you asked me where my favorite place in the world is, I would tell you Rome.

why I love Rome so much!

I first traveled to Rome in 1983, as an architecture student. Our class traveled extensively throughout Italy as part of our program there, but I was always thrilled to return to Rome. I’ve been back many times since, and never tire of exploring – and eating in – this magnificent city. Obviously the fact that I lived there is a big part of why I have such an attachment. But it’s really so much more than that.

Rome embodies, for me, everything that I want in a city. There is no end of incredible art and architecture. The people are almost without exception beautiful, effortlessly chic and impossibly well-dressed. The cafe ritual is beyond. And the food? The simplest and yet the best I’ve ever had.

Roman cuisine, at its best, is simple perfection!

As a young girl I was absolutely blown away by the deliciousness of every single thing I ate while living in Rome. No matter what the meal, or where it was served, there was an approach to cooking that left an indelible impression on me, shaping the way I ate and cooked going forward. Because it wasn’t about fussy presentations or multi-layered this and that.

Any meal I have ever eaten in Rome has had the same elements in common:

The very best – and I mean, the VERY best – quality, fresh, gorgeous ingredients
A modest portion (no “bottomless” bowls here!)
Simple but thoughtful presentation
Few (if any) condiments or add-ons

When Annie asked me to contribute a travel-inspired recipe, I knew just what I wanted to make. It’s quite summery in New York right now, and I took a cue from one of my favorite dishes served in my beloved city of Rome!

Why this appetizer of prosciutto wrapped figs is very Roman!

Hardly even a recipe, this starter of fresh figs wrapped in prosciutto embodies all the best qualities of any Roman dish. With only two ingredients, you’ll want to source the best you can find – your local farmer’s market is a great place to start!

Roman appetizers are just that – food designed to whet, not crush, your appetite. While delicious and satisfying, this dish will not leave you too full to enjoy your meal.

And there is minimal fuss to the prep, presentation and serving – just wrap sliced figs in prosciutto, arrange on a platter and enjoy!

frequently asked questions!

I love cheese - can I add it to this recipe?

You sure can - and any cheese you like will work! Blue cheese, goat cheese, parmesan, mozzarella and even ricotta are all delicious additions.

Do you ever add any toppings or seasonings?

Yes - I did so here, adding a drizzle of honey and pinch of flaky sea salt just before serving. The sweet and salty nature of these 2 enhance the similar flavors of the figs and prosciutto, without overwhelming. But you don't have to stop there - you can add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or a fruity olive oil too!

Can you serve this dish warm?

Yes! Many varieties of figs are in-season from May through November, and this makes a perfect Thanksgiving appetizer as it can be scaled up easily and prepped in advance. You can place the wrapped figs (brushed with a little olive oil) in a 425 degree oven for about 10 minutes. Roasted figs are delicious, and a lovely cool-weather starter. I've also seen recipes for cooking them on the grill, though I've never tried it!

Sheri! These look so delicious! I had no idea you could roast figs…that would be the perfect Thanksgiving appetizer. Your post today makes me want to book a trip to Rome and immediately go get some figs and prosciutto. I love the idea of a drizzle of honey…like maybe hot honey? I’m making these this weekend and will report back!

Sheri I love Rome also – and figs! What an awesome post. I had no idea you went to school in Rome. That had to have shaped your eye and tastes for food hugely… architecture!! Wow so cool.

What a perfect and delicious combination this is. We have so many fig varietals here in California this time of year. I have to get some good prosciutto and honey and try this. I love how elegant it looks and so easy too.

Thank you so much Kim! It’s been a curse and a blessing actually because having been there – and loving it so much – it’s hard to imagine not being there all the time! Jealous of your access to figs where you live – they are my absolute favorite! xo

Sheri, I too am a fan of Rome and have been lucky enough to travel there many times. There is always something “new” to see as you wander the streets. And the food…there are not words for the delicious things you find there.
You appetizer looks delicious! I cannot wait to make it. Thank you for sharing!
