this floating citronella candle is pretty AND practical!
I LOVE this project. It’s my perfect storm of DIY, easy, pretty, all-natural and practical! And during summer no less!
As I’ve shared countless times the bugs LOVE me. And I LOVE my all-natural bug spray. But I also love – I mean USED TO LOVE – my scented candles. And summer nights meant all the citronella cans and hurricanes and tea lights I could gather.
And while the citronella itself is a safe and effective repellent, those scented products were also filled with all sorts of other chemicals that were being emitted into the air (and into our lungs) as well.
Enter this charming floating citronella candle!
All you need are a few essential oils and whatever additional ingredients you like! I used lemon and orange peels along with fresh rosemary. But lavender, cinnamon, whole cloves and flower petals would be lovely too.
This makes a great hostess gift too – simply place the oils, witch hazel and citrus peels in a jar and tie the candle and herbs to the outside.
Pretty and practical? We’re winning summer evenings.
glass bowl or container
decorations of your choice – citrus peels, fresh herbs, cinnamon sticks, lavender buds, flower petals

10 drops Lemongrass essential oil
1 tablespoon witch hazel

Place the decorations in the bowl. Add the oils and witch hazel and fill the remaining space with water. Top with the floating candle.
Light and enjoy!
