When I made margarita Muddy Buddies (aka “Puppy Chow”) a few years ago I realized that this recipe could go beyond just the usual Chex cereal.

And if pretzels could work, why not popcorn?

Why not indeed.

I took the opportunity of the upcoming holiday to make these red, white and blue, but literally any of my past recipes would work beautifully. And with only a few ingredients you can have these whipped up in time for that picnic/barbecue/summer potluck!

Patriotic “Poppy” Chow

1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar, divided
1 cup each red, white and blue candy melts
9 cups plain popcorn (store bought, microwave or air popped from 1/4 cup kernels)

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. Place 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar into 3 large plastic or ziploc bags.

In a large heatproof bowl set over barely simmering water, melt the red candy melts. Remove bowl from heat and add 3 cups popcorn. Gently but thoroughly fold the popcorn till completely coated. Transfer to one of the bags of sugar, seal the bag and gently toss to coat completely. Pour onto your prepared baking sheet.

Wash out the bowl and repeat with the white and blue candy melts. Place in the fridge to set; keep covered and refrigerated till ready to serve.
