bird seed hearts

bird seed hearts are an easy and unique valentine’s day craft for any age!

I’m always amazed (and often dismayed) at which of my posts get tons of views, likes and shares – and which get crickets. This whole blogging thing seems so random so much of the time.

For example – can you guess what my most-viewed post of all time is? It’s my original sprinkles tutorial, posted almost FIVE YEARS AGO. It’s been viewed over 175,000 times, and do you know why? Clearly not for the photography (Go take a look. No seriously, go. I’ll wait.). And while I’d like to think it was my groundbreaking instructions, um, nope again. It’s because it was featured in a round-up that was picked up by BuzzFeed and went crazy viral.

Even better? The post that’s been pinned the most. It’s my kids’ holiday crafts post – pinned a whopping 166,000 times. And from what I can gather, it’s the orange bird feeder driving all those many pins. Seriously. That image has been featured in countless blog round-ups, on-line publications and several print magazines all over the world.

You guys really love that bird feeder.

So I thought I’d make you another.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I thought it would be fun to create a non-food treat to hand out for parties and classroom celebrations. And these couldn’t be easier to make!

A few simple ingredients are all you need, as well as a heart-shaped pan or cookie cutter.

I was gifted the pan and decided to use it but the cookie cutters worked beautifully. The recipe yielded 24 hearts ranging in size from 2 1/2″ – 3 1/4″ at the widest point (depending on the size of your cutter).

Tie them up with some twine, add a label (print these out if you like) and pop into a cellophane bag.

Could these be any cuter? Now go pin, please!

Bird Seed Hearts
from Wine and Glue

3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
1 envelope (2 1/2 teaspoons) unflavored gelatin
3 tablespoons corn syrup
3 cups bird seed

If using pans, spray with non-stick cooking spray. If using a cookie cutter, line two baking sheets with wax or parchment paper; spray a heart-shaped cookie cutter (2 1/2″ – 3 1/2″ wide) with non-stick cooking spray.

Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl. If using pans, press a spoonful of mixture into each well, tamping down till smooth and level. Use a chopstick to make a hole near the center. If using a cutter, place on one of your prepared sheets and press a few spoonfuls of mixture in. Using a greased spoon, tamp down till smooth and level. Use a chopstick to make a hole near the center. Repeat till all of the mixture is used (you may need to spray the cutter a few more times if it begins to stick).

Let harden overnight and add twine for hanging, as shown.
