Does your garbage disposal ever get that “not so fresh feeling”?

You know what I mean – and if you’ve ever tossed some lemon or lime peels down there you are going to love this little DIY.

Using materials that you probably have right now in your kitchen you can make these eco-friendly “pods” to keep by the sink. Just toss a few in every now and then to freshen things up.

This works with any citrus fruit you have on-hand, and how cute do they look in that glass jar?

PSA: You “may” want to label your container with the contents. Or just a big ole tag that says “DO NOT EAT”! Because it’s possible that a member (or two) of your family might mistake these for – oh, I don’t know – a treat????

Citrus Garbage Disposal “Pods”
from Popsugar

3/4 c. baking soda
1/2 c. salt
1/2 t. liquid dish soap
1 lemon

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper – set aside.

Mix baking soda and salt in a medium-size bowl. Grate the lemon peel into the mixture, and add the dish soap.

Juice the lemon into a small dish – add a tablespoon at a time to your bowl, stirring (and adding more juice if needed) till the mixture feels like coarse sand. This will take between two and three tablespoons.

Using a rounded teaspoon (or melon scooper), pack with the mixture and tap out onto your prepared baking sheet.

Let dry overnight and store in an airtight container.

Disposals can indeed have a noxious smell. I have found that keeping the under part of the black “flange” which surrounds the opening clean does wonders for keeping the sink area smelling fresh. Wearing gloves take a paper towel and clean under the black flange. You will be surprised at the “stuff” that the paper towel collects. I do this weekly and my sink always smells fresh. If you have a removable black flange take it out and run it under hot water. Also I never put raw onions or garlic into the disposal.

I am now almost afraid to get under that flange – I think I’ll wait till tomorrow….. 😉
