favor-“ette”: beach board game

For me, one of the most exciting things about Alt NYC was the chance to spend the day at Martha Stewart’s headquarters. I have been a fan for close to 30 years, and have subscribed to her magazine since its inception (1991, in case you were wondering). I’ve used so many of her ideas and recipes over the years that there probably isn’t a corner of my house or a meal or dessert served that in some way doesn’t have her stamp on it.

And though I don’t think that attending Alt could count as a “#52 on the life list” check off, it was thrilling nonetheless. And never more so than when Martha herself entered the room, between two of the morning panel sessions.

She was as regal and gracious as you’d imagine her to be, and gave every attendee a copy of her newest book,  Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts For Kids.

This is an adorable book, filled with charming crafts for kids of all ages – many for even very young children.

And I knew just which project I wanted to tackle first.

We are taking Noah on a beach vacation later this month, and I know he will love looking for shells and pebbles to play these games.

I love everything about this project – minimal materials, easy to execute, and how cute?

Beach Board Games
from Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts For Kids

You’ll need:
Ruler
Disappearing-ink fabric pen
Fabric place mat
Vinyl eraser
Fabric paint

Using the ruler and disappearing-ink pen, draw guidelines for checkers on one side and tic-tac-toe on the other side of your placemat.

For the checkerboard, dip the eraser into the fabric paint and stamp every other square. For the tic-tac-toe board, you may want to cut the eraser and use the side to make thinner lines. Let dry.

Collect pebbles, shells and sea glass for playing pieces, separating them into light and dark colors.
