Can you tell how excited I am?
I am a huge fan of the books Hello, Cupcake!, What’s New Cupcake? and Cupcakes, Cookies & Pie, Oh, My! Authors Karen Tack and Alan Richardson have done an incredible job in creating books that allow anyone – even the most novice baker – to execute totally charming and professional-looking cupcakes.
I was impressed from the get-go with the detailed, easy-to-follow instructions in all of their books. As a passionate home-baker for over 25 years, I own more than my share of cookbooks. And it is SO frustrating to get your hands on a beautiful book, only to find that the recipes are either unclear, incomplete or filled with mistakes. These books are impeccably thought out, and appeal to any level of baker.
In addition, the quality of the photography is superb – you will literally want to make every project.
But it’s the simplicity of the projects that just blows me away. Even the cakes that have many steps or components – once you break them down – are not at all difficult. And there are no fancy tools, ingredients or equipment needed. They all use basic items (ziploc bags, scissors, paring knives) that you probably already have in your kitchen. The candies and cookies that are used to decorate the cupcakes are easy to find too.
So you can imagine how thrilled I was to learn about the Hello Cupcake app. Alan was kind enough to let me give it a test run and I can honestly tell you that I love it (but don’t just take my word for it – it was named iTunes “App of the Week”).
The app (created by Culinate, and available for iPhone and iPad) includes 10 projects, cleverly displayed in cupcake tins. As more projects become available for purchase, you can add them to your “trays”. To begin, you simply tap the cupcake that you want to make, and are brought to a cute stop-action video that introduces you to the project. What follows are high quality videos and text that walk you through, step by step. Helpful voice-overs explain each step in even more detail.
There is also a series of videos illustrating all of the basic techniques (baking and frosting cupcakes, shaping candies and cookies, etc.) you’ll need to know. Even though I own the books and consider myself to be a pretty skilled baker, I really appreciate these extra videos – they are so clear and helpful, and in my opinion really enhance the value of this app.
Okay, okay – the giveaway!
I am so excited to have 3 apps (each valued at $2.99) to give away this week! Simply leave a comment below, telling me your favorite cupcake/frosting combination (I’m vanilla/vanilla. Unless there’s bacon. Bacon always trumps vanilla). Be sure to include your e-mail address if it’s not already linked to your comment. The giveaway is open through Sunday, May 13th at 5 p.m. EST. The winners will be chosen at random, and announced on Monday, May 14th. Update: Esther F., Jennifer B. and Jen G. are the lucky winners. Thanks for playing!
Be sure to let all of your friends know too! And as Karen and Alan like to say, “Happy Cupcaking”!
Note: I was not compensated for this post. I received the app to review and have expressed my honest opinions here.
