a simply wonderful sour cream coffee cake

So happy to share this with you today.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

I’m pretty sure that there is not a person in my life who has not been a recipient of this cake – either in my home or delivered to theirs – since I first tried it myself, over 20 years ago..

I had just brought Conor home and was exhausted and overwhelmed. My friend Mia invited me over to her house, took Conor out of my arms and put a slice of this cake in front of me. And it was the best thing ever. Both the afternoon AND the cake (and Mia too, TBH).

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

I don’t know how something so simple could be so delicious and satisfying – and I will probably always be somewhat biased and emotional about it – but anyone I’ve ever served it to has had the same reaction.

I’ve made this cake more than any other treat. More than these cookies. More than this cake. And I ALWAYS make two (it’s seriously that easy). It’s what I make for bake sales, back-to-school nights, impromptu get-togethers, housewarmings, and of course new moms.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

What’s your “most made” treat?

Mia’s Coffee Cake (makes one cake but I always double it)

1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream
2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees; grease and flour an 8″ x 8″ pan. Place 1/2 cup sugar and the cinnamon in a small bowl and stir to combine.

Beat the butter and remaining 1 cup sugar till light and fluffy – add the eggs and beat again, followed by the vanilla and sour cream. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and beat till combined.

Pour 1/2 the batter into your pan – smooth with an angled spatula and top with half the cinnamon-sugar. Repeat. Bake for 40 minutes or till a tester tests clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove from pan to cool completely.

    Sheri –
Planning to make this. Do you think I can use light sour cream or do you think the taste would be compromised
    Thanks

I think it would be fine – I’ve never tried it myself so would you let me know how it works out? 🙂

Trying double batch. Using 1/2 Brown sugar and apple pie mix and sugar in the middle.

OOH! Let me know how it turns out! If you can give me the exact measurements I’ll add it to the recipe! 🙂
