the perfect white shirt

When people visited our old house they would often gasp upon entering our bedroom closet.

It was huge.

And it was good.

But when we moved last month I knew that our new closet – though considerably smaller – would be just fine, for a few reasons:

1. Mike is a closet design ninja – he did all the closets in our old house using Easy Closets, and did the same here. This system is genius, and gives us custom-quality closets at a fraction of the price.

2.I have a lot less clothes than I once did, courtesy of the capsule wardrobe concept I adopted a few years ago.

Unlike other fads and trends that come and go, the capsule has truly been a game changer for me – and one I have stayed with. When I started packing up in preparation for our move, I was more intent than ever on not taking anything that hadn’t been worn in a year or more. And I made two giant piles – one for Goodwill and one for sale on Poshmark (if you’ve not heard of Poshmark you can read my post and try it for yourself – I LOVE it).

As I’ve mentioned before, not only did the capsule drastically reduce the amount of clothing I own, it really reshaped the way I shop. If I’m going to purchase an item – unless it’s a cheap splurge on a trend piece – I want it to be high quality and extremely versatile. If that means spending a bit more I’m happy to do it because I’m buying so much less – and so much less frequently.

As a result, I’ve found some stand-out items that I wanted to share with you, starting with my favorite white button-down:**

I purchased the pin-striped version of this blouse a few years ago, justifying the cost because it was for a special occasion (Chelsea’s college graduation). I contemplated getting it in white too, but felt it was too much for “just” a white shirt.

But the good fortune of a gift card was my chance to snatch one up and I’m so glad I did. I literally live in this shirt and recently bought another as a “back-up”, in case it’s ever discontinued.

So why do I love it so much? It’s all in the subtle – yet major – details.

The cuff is a double – or French – style. So it hangs a bit long, and looks stylish peeking out from a blazer or sweater sleeve.

The cut is fitted, giving the shirt a more feminine profile and a nice neat look when tucked into a pair of high-waisted flared jeans.

The length is longer, so the shirt looks equally cool tucked out – I love it over cigarette pants, paired with cute flats.

The style bloggers I gravitate toward are those who keep it simple – Reese Blutstein of double3xposure is a current favorite. I admire how – with fewer and typically less-adorned pieces – they still manage to make a statement. And upon closer inspection it’s clear that the devil is in the details.

And this shirt is all about the details.

Do you have a favorite item that you hit replay with? Stay tuned for more; in the mean time take a peek at more capsule wardrobe, clothing picks and favor-“ettes” on Pinterest!

**Note: Since writing this post this shirt has long since been discontinued. As white shirts don’t have the longest shelf-life I tried this shirt in its place. I LOVE it, the regular cuff actually makes the sleeves easier to roll, and it’s half the price. I have it in the striped and black versions too!

    Love this
I followed your capsule wardrobe and moved into a closet less than half of my old closet, easily!
    I must get this shirt.
