I typically eat lunch at home, and it’s typically low-fuss – a handful of pistachios, some turkey jerky or a homemade energy ball/bite/bar.
But on the occasion that I meet a friend out, I do enjoy a proper sandwich – which is why I was excited to take on the challenge of making an easy, 6-ingredient sandwich using Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse™ Hearty White bread, Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Honey Ham and Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise.
Spring is almost here and I wanted to create a light yet decadent sandwich that would be easy enough to pull together just for me, yet “worth it” enough to take the time.
I headed to Walmart to buy my 3 main ingredients:
I don’t indulge in bread often, but when I do I love Pepperidge Farm®. It’s sturdy yet tender and holds up to any fillings, hot or cold. Hillshire Farm® slow roasts its Honey Ham, making it just a bit sweet and super flavorful. As for Hellmann’s®? We go way back – it’s my fave.
Now for my other 3 ingredients:
Though Liz Lemon would have you put potato chips on your sandwich (and who could argue with that?), I opted for thinly sliced Granny Smith apples. Major crunch, zero guilt and a pretty, springtime green.
And while you can’t go wrong with straight-up mayo (have I mentioned how much I love my Hellman’s®?), I’m a fan of jazzing things up a bit, and this time I went with a swirl of mango chutney. It’s the perfect complement to the mayo, and if you’ve never tried it you’re in for a treat.
Finally I added cheese. Because well, cheese, and a sandwich is not a sandwich without it. I love Gouda but choose your favorite.
Before I get to the recipe I wanted to share one of my favorite tips for super-delicious grilled cheese. Instead of melting butter in the skillet, spread the outsides of the bread – generously – with mayonnaise.
Slathering the bread with mayo does two amazing things – it results in a sandwich with a gorgeous golden crust, along with a subtle yet delectable tang that is just divine. Try it. You’ll like it.
As for this sandwich? Major yum. I love the combination of warm and cool, crunchy and melty, sweet and salty. In other words, a lunch that is worthy of YOU.

For two sandwiches (serving 2) you’ll need: In a small bowl combine the ½ cup mayonnaise and chutney – set aside. Generously spread some plain mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Place two of the bread slices, mayo-side down, on a pre-heated griddle over medium heat.. Top each with the Gouda, cover and cook till cheese is melted and the undersides of the bread are golden brown. Transfer to a cutting board and repeat with remaining slices of bread (do not top with cheese). Top the grilled cheese with the chutney-mayo, ham and apple slices. Place the other slice of bread on top, cut in half and serve immediately. This delicious recipe brought to you by Sheri Silver
