nyc-etc: gotham west market

When a friend Instagrammed a food photo a while back, tagged “Gotham West Market”, my foodie/New Yorker/lover-of-cool-things radar went a bit bonkers.

How had I missed this?

My NYC street cred took a major hit that day.

Designed to lure potential renters to the area, Gotham West Market is attached to a new luxury building in Hell’s Kitchen – and based on the line-up of vendors, worthy of a special trip. I was virtually drooling after reading about the array of purveyors serving up all manner of  deliciousness.

I had to check it out. And I was undeterred by the fact that this was a neighborhood that makes me think more Lincoln Tunnel and Jacob Javits Center than “amazing food”.

If you are easily overwhelmed by too many choices – as am I – then you will love the edited selection here. With only eight vendors to choose from, there’s something to please almost everyone, without that heady “how will I choose” feeling that comes with some of the bigger food venues in the city (I adore Smorgasburg but I do get a bit anxious when making my way through the seemingly endless vendors they now feature).

Mike and Noah met me there a few weeks ago, and I got there early to scope it out and take some pictures. I loved the cheeky signage and industrial decor.

And I was thrilled to see that Brooklyn Kitchen has set up an outpost – offering classes too!

I stocked up.

Noah represented us at Ivan Orkin’s cult-following ramen shop.

And Mike and I went old school at Genuine Roadside (what can I say? I’m a sucker for bad 70’s decor. And cassettes. And fried chicken sandwiches).

I will definitely be returning, to sample the famous tapas at Seamus Mullen’s El Comado. And some charcuterie from Cannibal (and a slice of their s’mores icebox cake). And maybe a sandwich from Court Street Grocers.

Take a look at the website for a more extensive look at the vendors (preferably when you’re NOT famished) – and head west!
