favor-“ette”: poshmark

Following my latest efforts to purge my wardrobe and streamline “my style”, I found myself with several bags – even more than usual – of clothing, shoes and accessories.

There’s always a mixed bag of feelings associated with this occurrence. On the one hand, relief. Relief that those rarely (or in a few cases, never) worn items are out of my closet – and out of sight. There is great satisfaction in looking at a pared-down closet, filled only with the things that are truly worn and loved.

But – there’s also the guilt. Guilt over STILL buying clothing, shoes and accessories that turn out  to be – whether it’s days, weeks or months later – mistakes. Costly mistakes, when tallied up.

My go-to move was always Goodwill – which assuaged the guilt somewhat. But this time was different. I wanted to try and see if I could sell some, if not all of it – and at least make some money back on my considerable investment. So I asked around and called a few local consignment shops. They either didn’t want/need/sell the kind of stuff I was offering, or had a wait list for new clients that was years long.

Frustrated, I decided to peruse my “on-line” options and was quickly directed to Poshmark:

“Poshmark is a fun and simple way to buy and sell fashion – straight from your mobile phone.”

Guys, I couldn’t be more satisfied with this site – in every way. While you can certainly “shop” the site and purchase items for yourself, I’ve used it exclusively for selling – which I’m focusing on here.

Poshmark has thought of everything, to ensure a safe and seamless (and easy!) transaction, each and every time. Here’s how it works (and of course you can read more on their web site):

Once you’ve created your account (using your iPhone or Android), start listing items to sell. The app takes you through the process, which involves snapping a few photos of the intended item and filling out the required fields.

And that’s it! Once your item sells, you are notified right away. You then print out a pre-paid shipping label (free up to two pounds; $1.99 per pound above that), pack up the item and ship it off! Once received by the buyer, you are notified again, at which point your earnings are deposited into your Poshmark account (for use in purchasing other items or for transfer into your checking account).

Poshmark’s fee is simple and straightforward – when you make a sale, they deduct a 20% commission fee from your earnings. This means that you keep 80% of the sale price. Poshmark handles the financial transaction (including paying all those credit card fees) and serves as your customer support team for your sale.

So if, for example, you sell a $100 pair of boots on Poshmark, $80 is deposited into your Poshmark account – with no credit card fees, no fees for withdrawing your earnings, no PayPal fees and no shipping fees.

Super easy!

Here’s what my “page” looks like:

And that’s all there is to it! There is lots more information on the Poshmark web site, and I found this Style Luxe for Less post to be very helpful when I started out.

Take a look, and let me know if you join, so I can “follow” you!

Happy selling (and shopping)!
