favor-“ette”: denim shirt (part one)

I’ll admit, I was late to the denim shirt trend. I never really appreciated how versatile this article of clothing could be, until I found myself reaching for it again and again – for all sorts of outfits and occasions.

Now I practically live in this shirt. It’s a medium wash and slightly fitted, which gives me the most options. Here are just a few of my favorite ways to wear it:

blue jeans printed belt ballet flats

matchstick jeans/printed belt/ballet flats

This is my go-to outfit, in some variation, several times a week – I feel polished and pulled together, yet comfortable and practical too.  And if these jeans look familiar it’s because they’re my favorite pair! For the shirt, I roll up the sleeves and do a “half-tuck”, so that the belt peeks through. The jeans get a high cuff. When pairing denim with denim, the key is contrasting washes. Pair a lighter wash shirt with a dark bottom, as shown here, or vice versa. This avoids what I call the “jean pajamas” look.

black skinnies sneakers sweater

skinny jeans/sweater jacket/sneakers

For a more casual look, my trusty skinny jeans get paired with some fun sneakers and a comfy jacket-style sweater. A classic gray crewneck sweatshirt would look great here too. Wear the shirt untucked, so that it hangs out from the bottom of the sweater.

maxi skirt ankle boots

maxi skirt/ankle boots

Don’t put your maxi skirt away yet! Pair it with your denim shirt – knotted in the front – and a pair of wedge boots. Add a big knit scarf and you’ve got the perfect fall outfit!

capris heels pearl necklace

pants/necklace/pumps

These next two looks are great examples of how denim can go dressy too. First up: pair the shirt (knotted or tucked in) with simple pumps and a statement necklace.

sequin skirt strappy sandals

skirt/sandals

And I adore this idea of denim paired with a sequin pencil skirt. I would tuck in the skirt and add a few bangle bracelets.

So what do you all think? Do you love a denim shirt as much as I do? How do you wear yours?

I am intrigued by the half tuck. I did finally find a lite weight denim shirt I wore a bunch as after pregnant wear. Looks great with chunky costume jewelry.Nicely done post.

I love all of the outfits you’ve posted to wear with that denim shirt. I still like the Denim shirt but refuse to own one just because it reminds me of my college days and I can’t bring myself to think of those days lol
