One of the best things about our trip to Paris was the fact that we had both been there before. We had done most of the “major” sights and museums so were able to focus on lots of meandering and people watching (and eating, of course).
One neighborhood that neither of us had been to was the hill town Montmartre. Most famous for the beautiful Sacre Coeur basilica that sits at the very top of the hill, the town is also known for its picturesque streets and buildings, as well as a few bakeries that were on “our list”.
Using said bakeries to create our walking itinerary (we are nothing if not highly focused), we set out. We started with the church, figuring we’d tackle the hill-thing first, rewarding ourselves with many pastry stops on the way down (did I mention that we are focused?).
We had the most lovely morning – it was a cool, gray day, which made us feel even more “are we in a movie right now or what?”, than you feel on almost any given day in Paris.
And when the pastries rival cobblestoned streets and ivy covered buildings for “most picturesque”, you know that things are getting real.
We DID make a pilgrimage to the cheesy slash wonderful Moulin Rouge – in literally, THE seediest neighborhood I’d ever seen – because my lovely daughter’s tween years were set to the soundtrack of the movie and, well, we HAD TO!
But we rewarded ourselves with some “macarons-to-go” for the Metro ride back.
For a funny and informative read, I highly recommend this guide/walking tour of Montmartre.

Great photos!! I love the art history in this neighborhood of Paris. It was one of my first stops when I visited and it was so fun to walk around. The art deco and cabaret history there is amazing too.
