goody bags. again.

When Noah turned four last November he had his first “friend” party. We held it at our local nature center, and served Sponge Bob cupcakes.noah

And I assembled goody bags for the first time in almost 10 years.

I was never a fan of the goody bags – for the most part they were filled with too much junk (candy and otherwise) – most of which would wind up getting thrown away, collecting dust or stuck in the crevices of the car. So I always tried to put together favors that were of some quality, without breaking the bank (or causing me to lose my mind in the process).

Fortunately, I didn’t have to think too hard – or too long – this time around. I simply used this idea, which I saw at a party for my friend Meg’s daughter:

grow your own grass goody bags

These “grow your own grass” pots are one of my favorite goody bag ideas ever. They were easy to assemble, inexpensive and something a little different.

Here’s what you’ll need:

small pots (terra cotta or plastic)
gravel (available at most gardening or pet supply stores)
potting soil
grass seed
stickers
small bags and envelopes
grass growing instructions (below)

Fill the bags and envelopes with soil, gravel, grass seeds and stickers – label each. You can tie up the instructions with a little twine if you like.

Here are the instructions:

1. Decorate your pot with stickers
2. Cover the bottom of the pot with the gravel.
3. Add the potting soil, leaving about 1/2″ below the rim of the pot.
4. Sprinkle the grass seeds on top of the soil – don’t press them in!
5. Give just enough water till damp, but not soaked – cover with plastic wrap and place in a sunny window.
6. Once the seeds have sprouted remove the plastic wrap and keep the soil moist, but not soggy.
7. Give your grass a “haircut” as needed!

Cute, right? If you do this in the summer you can place the pot right outside.

What are some of your favorite goody bag ideas – Noah’s fifth birthday feels just around the corner!

Best favor ever? Goldfish in a little bowl for each kid. Remember when my boys turned 4? Or was it 3?
