favor-“ette”: a perfectly (imperfect) rolled sleeve

Am I the only one who’s obsessed with J. Crew? Like, obsessed in that I-worship-Jenna-Lyons kind of way?

Of the many (many) things they do well, I think one of the best is the perfectly imperfect vibe that all of the outfits seem to project. Nothing ever looks “done”, yet it always looks totally cool.

I mean, seriously? (image credit: J. Crew)

In particular, the rolled up sleeve.

Now, me and rolled up sleeves go waaaaaay back. And it was a technique that I thought I had nailed. But there was something about that J. Crew sleeve that seemed different. Better. And it eluded me.

Till now.

I was in a store recently when I noticed an employee dressing a mannequin – with rolled up sleeves! So I straight up asked her, “how in the heck do you do those awesome sleeve roll-ups (or something equally smooth like that)?”

And you guys – she showed me how.

And I’m going to show all of you.

Are you jumping up and down, clapping your hands yet??

Let’s go!

Start by unbuttoning the sleeves and cuffs.

Now fold the sleeve up, so that the bottom of the cuff sits just above your elbow.

Fold up once again, but this time – using your thumb – start tucking the cuff into the fold. Continue folding and tucking:

Make sure that a little bit of cuff is sticking out, and that the sleeves aren’t matchy-matchy.

Dunzo.

Cool, right? It’s less bulky than the “old” way, and it’s actually a tighter roll that stays in place much better.

In short – this is a game changer, people.

So go – roll up some sleeves why don’t you (and you don’t have to let anyone know our secret……).

Thanks for the tutorial — have been trying unsuccessfully to master this look. Have been rocking the half tuck for awhile now and highly recommend it. Also, love your polka dot shirt!

WOW!! I’ve been rolling from the cuff over and over, not starting at the elbow, but at the wrist.
Thanks alot, now I can be cool and loosely neat!
