the best milky way brownies recipe you’ll ever make!
Putting Milky Way candy bars in brownie batter is possibly the best idea EVER!
ditch the brownie mix and make these aaaaamazing Milky Way brownies!
I’ve updated the photos – and added video – to this post because, well, it deserved a refresh! Not only is this one of my oldest, most popular recipes on the blog, it is also a recipe that I actually make throughout the year. Being in this food space I am constantly turning out food – for myself and clients. And as I mostly favor the “sweet” side of things, I tend to forget some of my older recipes.
But not these delicious brownies!
here’s why this Milky Way brownies recipe is one of my favorites!
The more boxes a recipe can check off for me, the more likely it will become a repeat recipe. Here’s what I love so much about these chocolate brownies:
- they are DELICIOUS – I mean, obviously, right? But if we can agree that it’s kind of hard to make a bad brownie, to make one that stands apart from the rest is a “good thing”. Though not a chocolate lover, a Milky Way is a favorite candy bar of mine, and the fudgy brownie combined with the gooey caramel and chocolate nougat takes these to a whole other level.
- they are EASY – While I don’t shy away from fussing over desserts, homemade brownies (IMHO) should be easy peasy. And these are. You don’t even need a stand mixer! Just two bowls and a whisk.
- they are UNFUSSY – a simple ingredient list, comprised of items you can easily find in the grocery store, means that you can decide last minute to make them and know you’ll be able to quickly get everything you need.
- they yield A LOT – most brownies are made in a square baking dish or sometimes a 9 x13 pan. This recipe is baked up in a sheet pan and yields 4 dozen generously sized brownies. So, basically perfect for parties and barbecues, or if I need to parcel out a bunch of sweet treats to give away at the holidays.
what ingredients do you need?
To make these brownies, you will need:
unsalted butter
chocolate chips
unsweetened chocolate
instant espresso powder
eggs
vanilla extract
sugar
flour
baking powder
kosher salt
Milky Way bars
how do you make them?
Start by melting the butter and both chocolates in a large bowl. In a medium bowl whisk the eggs, espresso powder, vanilla and sugar, and whisk that into the melted chocolate butter mixture. Fold in the dry ingredients, along with some of the Milky Way bars and pour into a prepared sheet pan. Top with the remaining Milky Way bars and bake!
This is the ultimate dessert and is always such a huge hit. The prep time is minimal and results in such a special treat that everyone will love! Let me know if you make them (and be sure to serve with a big glass of milk)!
Milky Way Brownies!
Ingredients
- 1 pound 4 sticks unsalted butter
- 1 pound semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped semi-sweet chocolate
- 6 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
- 2 tablespoons instant espresso powder or instant coffee
- 7 large eggs, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups sugar
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 10 full-sized Milky Way bars chilled
Instructions
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a sheet pan (or use a nonstick cooking spray) and make a foil or parchment paper "sling" (if using aluminum foil, butter the foil as well).
- In a large heat-proof bowl set over a pan of simmering water on low heat, melt the butter and both chocolates, stirring occasionally till completely smooth. Cool slightly.
- In a separate bowl, lightly whisk the eggs. Add the espresso powder, vanilla and sugar, whisking till combined. Whisk into the melted butter chocolate mixture and cool to room temperature.
- Chop seven of the Milky Way bars and thinly slice the remaining three bars.
- Add the flour, baking powder and salt - fold in till just combined. Fold in the chopped Milky Way pieces and pour mixture into your prepared pan. Smooth top into an even layer with an offset spatula. Place the sliced Milky Way bars evenly on top.
- Bake the brownies for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out with just a few crumbs attached (do not over bake). Let cool completely on a wire rack, then cover tightly and chill overnight (this is the hardest part but is the easiest way to make sure you get nice clean cuts!)
- Use a thin knife to loosen the brownies from the sides of the pan. Using your sling, transfer the brownies in one piece to a cutting board. Use a sharp knife and cut into 48 bars. Store cut brownies chilled in an airtight container till about an hour before serving.
