As many of you know, I’m a fan of obsessed with “Mad Men”. I love everything about it – the story lines, the characters and most of all, the art direction. It is all magnificent, and confirms for me that I was truly born in the wrong time.
But the episode that sent me over the moon was “The Jet Set”. The scenes in Palm Springs are, for me, some of the most perfectly crafted ever on television. And it cemented my determination to get there someday.
Fast forward four years. I am booked for Camp Mighty.
In Palm Springs.
This was my chance and I was hell bent on making it happen.
I put a shout out to my Camp Mighty team mates, to see if anyone was interested in doing a tour of mid-century modern architecture. And the lovely Kari (herself a mid-century maven) not only stepped up, she found a guided tour that was perfectly timed to take place before Camp began.
Robert Imber is a walking encyclopedia of facts and trivia about the town, its famous inhabitants and – best of all – the architecture. He told us about the year-round residents that dress in vintage clothing and even drive cars from that era. And it really did feel like we had stepped back in time.
We covered only a fraction of everything there was to see but it was more than enough for me. It was all a bit surreal, and I was in heaven.
By the end of the day I was longing for cigarette pants and a turban. And was giving serious thought to changing my name to Slim.
Life list #18 – check!
If you EVER are lucky enough to find yourself in Palm Springs, I can’t recommend this tour– and tour guide – highly enough.
Oh – and while you’re there, please stop by “our” house:
Kari and I will be waiting for you……….with rumaki and martinis, of course.
Do you have a fantasy destination? If you got there, was it all you expected it to be? And do you ever wish you lived in a different period of time?

I love that you got to do this, and I LOVE “your house”! You go, with your Mighty self!
Thanks! It’s a good one, right? 🙂
Yay! This was so fun – so glad we got to do this together. And don’t think I am not looking for the perfect color-coordinated lounging outfit to go with our house.
Me too! And yes, I agree that matching outfits are a must! 🙂
Love this, Sheri! I’m definitely making time to do this during next year’s Camp Mighty.
Thanks so much! I love that you are already set to go back next year – have a great holiday! 🙂
WOW. I’m pretty bummed that I didn’t have time to get in on this tour. Gorgeous! And congrats on checking this off of your list, Sheri. 🙂
Thanks Amber – this was proof of Maggie’s point about being more determined and aware once you put something “on the list”. My flight was late and I made it to the tour just in time!
thanks for sharing your trip totally awesome and love your place
Thank you! 🙂
Such great architecture – my husband went on a similar tour n Palm Springs before I was part of the picture, I must say now I’m a fan of mid-century modern as well.
I don’t feel I should have lived in a different era but I would like to go back in time for a visit to the “Roaring 20’s” maybe for a week and come back.
I like Palm Springs and I should be thankful I’m only 5 hours away via car but for whatever reason we don’t get there as often as we should.
Are you a fan of Frank Loyd Wright?
Marti
I adore FLW – ADORE!!! And was it you who gave me the bar recommendation? I saw it but didn’t have the opportunity to get there! 🙂
Yes, that was me who suggested Melvin’s you might have enjoyed it more if your husband was with you anyway so perhaps you can go the next time you’re West:)
Marti
Well I MUST get back there so hopefully I will!
