blove: raincoast cottage

I don’t recall quite when or how I discovered Sandra Harris and her lovely blog, Raincoast Cottage. What I DO recall is a post, where she listed some of her favorite things. And it could have been MY list. I immediately decided that a) I liked Sandra. A lot. And b) I wanted to be her friend.

Ah, the beauty of the internet. I hopped on over to her blog and left a comment. And a series of comments on a series of posts that followed. Soon enough we became Facebook friends, Twitter followees and even “off-line” buddies.

Raincoast Cottage is one of those blogs that so beautifully captures the personality of the writer. Sandra is a thoughtful, talented writer,  a fabulous photographer, and a lover of great design. Her style is not flashy, her blog not cluttered with bells and whistles, and her posts never shout out at you. Hers is more that “box of chocolates” type of blog, in that you never quite know what you’re going to get when you open it.

Which is one of my favorite features of Raincoast Cottage. For example, on any given day:

You might find yourself eavesdropping on a virtual “conversation” with another blogger about the creative process.

Or a seasonal, delicious, easy-to-execute recipe – like this one for honeycake (if you recall I actually posted about stopping whatever I was doing at the time to make this cake for the Jewish New Year).

Or a thought-provoking essay – I particularly loved this one about slowing down.

But don’t ever mistake Sandra’s quiet style for boring. Never. Between her awesome Friday links (almost sure to include a “Mad Men” tidbit), and photo essays of her many travels, Sandra’s blog is always a creative jolt.

Oh – and then there’s this: Viggo Mortensen. As blogging expert (you’re welcome).

I’ve met Sandra twice now in real life – once for a coffee and stroll in the Village, and recently with her lovely family – who Noah and I joined for a morning at the Brooklyn Flea. Not surprisingly, she is as warm and engaging in person as I expected her to be.

But I think what I love about Sandra’s blog most of all is her commitment to honestly documenting her journey as someone who creates – sharing her fears, self-doubts and disappointments all in equal measure to the “wins”. She avidly supports her fellow writers, collaborates on inspiring projects, and is not afraid to step back and re-group – if that’s what her inner voice is whispering.

So take a stroll over to Raincoast Cottage, won’t you? It’s Friday, so there are links!!

Wanna know what “blove” is?
