blove: girls of a certain age

I’m extra-excited about today’s “blove” – because this blogger is MY AGE, you guys. Which may not seem like such a big deal, but believe me – it’s huge.

See, when I started blogging less than two years ago, I really wasn’t following many other blogs. That quickly changed, and now I barely have time to keep up with all of the blogs I love, much less discovering new ones.

And as I started reading more and more, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the overwhelming majority of bloggers out there were young. Like, really young. Like, twenties and thirties young. Like, I could be their mother aunt mysteriously-youthful-looking-older-sister young.

Now, normally my age doesn’t bother me at all. I never see it as a handicap or a challenge in any other area of my life. But as a blogger I began to feel a little self-conscious. Like, what do I have to offer anyone out there if every other blogger is at least a decade younger than I?

And then my mom brought me an article about a new blog called Girls of a Certain Age.

Girls of a Certain Age is written by Kim France, and has become a daily “must-read”.

Kim was the founder and editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine for 10 years. She recently left the magazine world for good and now pens her blog from her home in New York City. Lucky us.

Kim mostly writes about fashion and culture, and – without fail – manages to find interesting, humorous links on pretty much a daily basis. She also does occasional style round-ups, and her many years in fashion publishing position her perfectly for this. These posts in particular resonate for me, as I can totally relate to the challenges of dressing stylishly without going “too youthful”.

And she delivers it all with some of the sharpest, funniest writing out there. Every line is pitch-perfect, and I never regret sneaking in the time to read her posts and click through the links.

Basically, I cannot recommend this blog highly enough.

As a daily reader of Girls of a Certain Age from the moment I discovered it, I am hard-pressed to pick my three favorite posts, but here are a few that stand out. That said, you won’t go wrong  just randomly clicking on anything this woman writes:

This tote bag round-up left me wanting every single bag (and seriously considering getting rid of almost every bag I own).

I think I’ve covered every inch of Soho that there is to shop. And yet this post about a recent Saturday spent there (and in particular the unknown-to-me Kiosk) has remained open in my browser for weeks.

Any typical morning or afternoon “links” post leads to all good things (especially since Kim loves pretty much everything I love – Arrested Development, Mindy Kaling, The Rolling Stones, oh I could go on and on and on….). But these link posts were especially chock-full:

Walter White’s meth lab – in Lego? Yes, please.

Jennifer Jason Leigh AND Lena Dunham? Made my day……

Mindy Kaling. ‘nough said.

And oh, my god – the catalogue-challenge series. This was truly original and absolutely hilarious.

Finally, my almost daily “I LOVE YOUR BLOG” tweets took a major uptick the day that Kim revealed in this link that she, too, thought clowns were scary. Need I say more?

In the article my mom gave me, Kim shared this thought about her blog: “I don’t think people come because they think I am a fashion or style expert, I think they come because they like the voice.”

For me, it’s definitely both.

So Kim France – can I, like, take you to lunch sometime??
