lipstick lessons (part two) – my favorite shades

I hope you enjoyed my lipstick tutorial last week – it was so much fun to write! Today I’m sharing my tried-and-true shades, and have enlisted the help of some of my fave bloggers to round out the list.

In that lipstick post I talked about going with a sheer formulation as a way to ease into a bold shade – like a classic red. For me, that means  Angel Red by Clinique –  a true red, but sheer enough so that I don’t feel overdone when I’m wearing it:

With lots of yellow in my skin, a berry/brick shade is my go-to color for fall and winter. I love Revlon’s Blackberry. It’s deep and rich and very flattering. And if I want to tone it down I’ll throw on a base of Adore U underneath:

I always want to go with a brighter, lighter shade for summer, but find that those lovely pale shades invariably make me look tired and washed out. And then Liz of Say Yes to Hoboken posted about orange-red lipsticks. I thought, this will be the perfect summer shade for me, and ran out to try out her selections. They were all gorgeous; however,  none quite right for me.

But I was now on  a mission.

A shout-out on Twitter yielded a response from another favorite blogger –  the ever-stylish Tracy from Tracy’s New York Life. She recommended L’Oreal’s Blazing Lava and it is perfect! The orangey tone brings the red into a more flattering shade for my skintone, and the formulation is long lasting and super comfortable:

Score!

I’d also love to share this link to favorite drugstore lipsticks by Alison of The Alison Show. Do you know this blog? I LOVE it – it’s literally like a party on your computer!

And since I’ve gone on about the virtues of lip liner, here’s a great neutral that goes with everything –  Lipblush, by Clinique:

And finally, the ONE lipstick that every woman should own – Black Honey, by Clinique. A sheer reddish-brown, this is one of the most universally flattering colors I’ve ever seen. Clinique has had it in their line forever and I doubt that it will ever be discontinued. Give it a spin next time you’re in the department store.

Fun post! My tried and true shades are Brown by Bobbi Brown, and MAC’s Twig. I’ve been using those two for years and years- I’m such a creature of habit!

I LOVED this, Sheri! I struggle with finding the perfect shade of lipstick but I really need it because without it I look dead. Seriously. On a desert island I would choose lipstick over mascara every day of the week. 🙂

And, I DO know the Allison Show! She is SO much fun!

SO glad you liked this! Maybe one of these shades will be “that one”! 🙂

What fun! I loved part 1 and was not dispointed with part 2! I have been between two shades, a Lnacome and a Bobbi Brown. I have to say, lipstick is really an obession with me! Thanks, and thanks for introducing me to some really new fun sites!!

I buy Clinique and Revlon too. Love the way they glide on and don’t contain too much perfume! xx

Agreed – I tried a new one recently and it was full of fragrance – not good.

I’m dying to find great lip colors that work for my red hair, sometimes ruddy skin and timid nature about bold lips. Love this post!
