a bakery, a bridge and a birthday

Sometime in March:

Me: So Chels, your 21st birthday is coming up – how should we celebrate?

Chelsea: You mean, other than THE CAKE?

Me: Yes.

Chels: I don’t know – how about drinks and desserts in the city?

Okay – I could do this. I’d gather her good friends at a cute dessert place, followed by drinks – somewhere. We quickly decided to delegate the “drinks” portion of the evening to her friends – leaving me to figure out a stellar dessert locale.

But where? If you’ve been following this blog for more than 5 minutes any length of time, you know that we cover a LOT of ground in the area of all things sweet. And those are just the places I post about. Between the waffle and ice cream trucks and  spontaneous happenings upon, we’ve racked up more than our share of sugary destinations.

So I thought. And I thought. And then I figured it out. Chelsea loves a cupcake – vanilla/vanilla preferably – and her very favorite cupcake is from One Girl Cookies (remember them? I wrote about them here. And baked the whoopie pies and s’mores from their wonderful book). Chelsea’s been to their Cobble Hill location but they had recently opened a new spot in DUMBO – which I checked out on my weekend alone.

It was perfect – the bakery was right near the Brooklyn Bridge and the evening unfolded in my mind like a dream. We’d have cupcakes and “Happy Birthdays” at One Girl, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, and bid the girls good-bye as they continued the festivities in Manhattan.

And that’s just what we did.

There may have been crowns and sashes involved.

And definitely lots of love.

From friends she’s had for three years:

And friends she’s had since she was three years old.

Grandma and Grandpa were there too (fun fact: Chelsea was born on their 30th wedding anniversary. Best. Gift. Ever.).

The walk across the bridge was as magical as always…

…and the city was the best backdrop I could have provided.

Happy happy 21st birthday Chels – we love you so much!
