blove: smitten kitchen

When I started writing about blove (read this post to learn more), my goal was to share a recipe or favorite find, as well as the blogger that introduced me to it. The first post was about a mom who makes creative lunches for  her two girls. Since then I’ve “bloved” about a food yenta, a cake baker and a self-taught chef.

In my anniversary post I wrote about the incredible support I’ve received from the blogging community – both locally and on a larger scale. It’s definitely been one of the most unexpected – and totally amazing – gifts to come out of this experience.

I also hinted at some new features I’d be introducing this year.  I started with D.I.Y., and this is “new feature number two”. It’s blove, for blove’s sake. My way of paying it forward, and sharing some of my most favorite blogs with all of you.

This is by no means a definitive, comprehensive or scientifically cultivated list. Some of these blogs you may already know, others you may discover for the first time here. They vary in style, size and subject matter. But there are definitely some common denominators:

Great writing.  Although I have no formal training as a writer, I enjoy the process immensely and hold good writing in very high regard. So all of these blogs have some really solid writing. Which is not to say that the posts are all serious (though sometimes they are) or lengthy (ditto). But they always leave me thinking, “damn – why didn’t I think of that?”.

They are well-designed. If you know me, you know that I’m passionate about design, and appreciate a site that is clean, appealing and thoughtfully laid out.

Time spent there is time “well-spent”. Whether I laughed out loud, paused to reflect on my own life as a result, or discovered an awesome new lipstick/recipe/photography tip, I want to be happy that I took the time to click and read.

I never miss a post. Some of my favorite bloggers write every day, others Monday-Friday, and  still others only occasionally. But a blog that’s “blove-worthy” is one that I make every effort  to keep up with.

Ready to start? Great!

There’s just one thing.  Go – read these blogs  – I hope you love them all as much as I do.

But you have to promise to come back, okay? Because I couldn’t bear to lose you!

Okay, NOW we can begin.

There was no question in my mind that the first blog in this series would be Smitten Kitchen.

As if you didn’t know.

I don’t even know how many of Deb’s (yes, I call her “Deb”) recipes I’ve made – several of which I’ve posted here. Like this. And this. Oh, and this. Smitten (yes, I call it “Smitten”) was the first blog I ever read and was hooked immediately.

Deb is a super talented chef and a gifted photographer – as a result, her posts are always crave-worthy. Though she mostly adapts from other sources she goes the extra mile to work out the kinks or streamline the process (sometimes both). I have yet to make a recipe of hers that isn’t a success.

These features all make her blog such a pleasure to peruse. But the reason I “blove” her is the writing. I just love it. It’s hilarious, warm and self-effacing. I’ve heard her on the radio and she writes exactly like she speaks – which is not as easy to do (or do well, anyway) as you might think.

And, I know I’m not alone amongst her gazillion fans in wanting to be her new best friend. She has an adorable son just a bit younger than Noah and I dream of “bumping into” her one day on one of my jaunts with him in the city (Is that creepy? Please say it’s not!).

Smitten Kitchen was one of my greatest inspirations when I started blogging, and I still read her site religiously. She’s coming out with a book soon and I cannot WAIT!

So check out my friend Deb – I know you will love her as much as I do!

Love this, Sheri. And with that, I have a question. How much must I pay you to get some blovin’???

    🙂
