So remember when I told you that I used to be a make-up artist? I’m working on a post about my favorite make-up tips and tricks, but this latest find was too good to keep till then.
I had been looking for an upgrade from my daily sunscreen/tinted moisturizer, but didn’t want a full-on foundation, which would be too much “look” for my everyday life. Just something with a bit more coverage and sufficient sunscreen (which I’m obsessive about), as I did not want to deal with two separate products.
And then I started seeing something called “beauty balms” everywhere – have you heard of them? They are new, and claim to “do it all” – foundation, sunscreen, anti-ager or make-up primer, depending on the company.
I’m typically skeptical of cosmetics that multi-task, but then I found out that Clinique had just come out with their version of the beauty balm (or “BB”). Having worked for them for many years I can attest to the fact that they really do their homework before rolling out a new product. The web site described their BB as offering, “SPF protection, antioxidants for prevention, plus enough coverage to banish imperfections”.

It sounded like exactly what I was looking for, so I gave it a try.
I absolutely love it!
It gives me more coverage than what I had been using, without looking heavy or “makeup-y” at all. It has an SPF 30 (score!) and gives my skin a polished, finished look. It’s also comfortable to wear and lasts the entire day.
The only issue I had is that it goes on very dry. Although my skin is (still!) oily, I am at the age where I prefer more of dewy finish, as opposed to matte. So what I do is apply the beauty balm immediately over my moisturizer, to give it a little “slip”. Works beautifully.
What are your go-to, can’t-live-without make-up items? Do you find yourself wearing more or less make-up now than when you were younger? Let me know!

Hi! I'm Sheri!
Welcome to my little corner of the web where you’ll find easy, delicious recipes, the best kitchen hacks and simple tips for turning your home into a clean haven that is free of toxins. So glad you’re here!
Sheri, you are a woman after my own heart. I’ve used both the Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer and the Laura Mercier one. And now I’ll have to try this one. Living in South Florida, it’s soooo important to have the high SPF. Especially since I am a woman of a certain age! Thanks.
Thanks Jennifer!
I really like makeup and love to experiment with it. With that said, I definitely like natural look… and turn it up with fun eye shadows and heavier mascara when I go out. I consider myself a die hard Bobby Brown/Aveeno fan. I like the simplicity of the Aveeno skin care/moisturizing sunscreen line and the natural colors that Bobby offers.
This BB cream sounds fantastic. I will def try it!
LOVE Bobbi Brown too!
I wear much less make up, I have never really been in to make up but my skin is changing. I feel like I wear more natural products too. I am in love with Origins VitaZing. Same concept but SPF 15. I adore.
I love Origins – must check it ou!
Thank you for this lovely review – I’ve been looking for a good foundation + sun screen, and this sounds like something I’d love to give a try. I usually go pretty natural – just some concealer, a little bit of powder and mascara. However, I’ve been a big fan of the red lipstick trend and would love to experiment with that!
I think you’ll like it. I’ve been doing the red lipstick for months now but read on “Say Yes to Hoboken” (who I LOVE!) that orange-red is what’s in for spring – I’ve bought a few and I think it will be a nice change now that the weather’s getting warmer! http://sayyestohoboken.com/2012/02/current-trend-crush-orange-red-lipstick.html
I just had to go look at what I use to remember. It’s Clinique “Super Defense” moisturizer, SPF 25. I love the idea of higher SPF and a tint. I’m sold! Thanks for the great tip.
Oh good! Hope you love it! 🙂
That foundation/sunscreen/anti-ageing product looks great. I hope we can get it here in Australia. And I am definitely wearing a lot less eye shadow than I used to! xx
You can order it on-line if it’s not available locally – and yes, I wear MUCH less eye make-up these days too! 🙂
I’ve been wanting to try a beauty balm – this looks like it’s the one for me! Going on dry is a big plus for me because of my oil-prone skin.
PS How cool that you used to be a makeup artist!
If you have oily skin I think you will LOVE this (and yes, being a make-up artist was one of the cooler jobs I’ve had!)……
