my life as a blog

Wow.

I am humbled, honored and more than a little excited to be featured in Blogstar’s “My Life As a Blog” series today.

What is Blogstar?

“Blogstar is a daily celebration of the future of publishing featuring those who make it happen: bloggers.”

It was founded by the smart and very talented Sarah Bryden-Brown (herself an accomplished – and published – author). Her site has been an amazing source of support and inspiration for me since I began blogging, and I was thrilled to be asked to contribute to this series.

Then I actually had to sit down and write it.

I was completely confident that this would be a breeze. I had a very clear vision of why I started my blog, and had written about it on my own site as well as in other publications. So I sat down and wrote. But it didn’t feel quite right. So I took a different approach. But that too, felt hollow, contrived.

Round three. Still not good enough.

Gulp.

What was going on here? I walked away from it for a few days, allowing myself to think hard and dig deep.

And then I realized what was missing, and literally smacked myself on the side of the head.

The honesty.

I had forgotten the honesty.

Yes, all of the previous drafts were truthful – in fact, they comprise the first three lines of the final post. But, in my heart I knew that they weren’t at the core of what the blog had truly become for me. I had never written these things down before, and frankly had barely allowed myself to even think about them. Was this the place to share? With a group of strangers whose first impression of me would be this post?

But one of the promises I made to myself when I started this blog was just that – to go outside my comfort zone and be a little bit more “out there”. And so I wrote the post you see today. It was a very powerful experience, and more than a little scary. I have no idea how it will be received, or what people may think of me as a result.

What I DO know is that it is the most honest account of what the past year has meant for me, and I am beyond appreciative to Sarah for the oppportunity to share it with all of you.

Thank you.

I absolutely loved what you wrote and as I was reading it I was thinking, ‘If I was invited to be featured on Blogstar, would I be able to write something this engaging’. Congratulations! It’s great that you’ve had such and unexpected but wonderful benefit from blogging.

Sheri – I just read your post on Blogstar and it brought me here. I loved what you wrote. Really, really loved it. I am a new blogger as of not even 4 months (and I also write some about divorce). So I could relate to so many of your sentiments, including…”I have no idea what people will think of me..” I am always working on not caring so much – and just pushing publish and going to sleep and not laying there wondering, should I have done that?? Anyway, it’s an interesting endeavor. But the rewards are pretty amazing. I look forward to checking out your blog. All the best to you.

Thank you Mara – I’ve been a fan of your blog already so it means so much that you took the time to write to me – that “publish” button seems so big sometimes, right?
