Chelsea was home a few weeks ago and her visit coincided with a cupcake class taught at one of our favorite bakeries, Butter Lane Cupcakes.
The class was listed as a “couples class” – but we decided to bend the rules and I’m glad we did. It was so much fun – our instructor was friendly and enthusiastic and we quickly bonded with our classmates – there was even another mother/daughter pair.
First, we voted on the three cupcake flavors as well as the buttercream varieties to go with them.
Then we got to work:
Lots of butter.
“Tasting” sticks – where else are you encouraged to lick the batter??
So nice to not have to clean up the mess for a change………..
Trays of cupcakes ready to hit the oven.
And then……………….the “Frosting-Off”.
We were each presented with two cupcakes and given a demonstration of how the bakery’s signature “swirl” of frosting is executed. We then had to duplicate. I was one of the three finalists (woo hoo!).
Our teacher gave each of the finalists one more cupcake to frost – but this time we would only have 30 seconds to complete it.
Chelsea, upon hearing this, sighed and said under her breath “forget it, Mom”.
See, as soon as any kind of challenge is timed – regardless of the task, my skill level or the potential winnings – I freeze. Chelsea knew that I would now proceed from flop sweat to shaky hands to total frosting-fail.
Which is exactly what happened.
I went from this:
And lost to the “other” mom.
Well, at least I can say I was “Blogger of the Week”.
Sour grapes much?
We frosted and sprinkled the rest of the cupcakes and got to take a bunch home.
Just a couple of cupcakes!
Thanks Butter Lane!
