from lemons…………

we got lemonade flubber.

Last week brought one of the most wet and dreary days yet this fall. No matter – Noah and I had the perfect “indoor” Thursday planned. A trip to the New Museum, downtown. It’s one of my favorites and I was looking forward to showing Noah.

We made our way from the garage, through the rain and to the museum.

To be handed free tickets (?).

To be told that the free tickets were our “prize” for coming on a day that the museum was “under installation”.

Uh-oh.

Even the cafe was closed. It was now no longer drizzling but full-on raining and we were in the Bowery – not the most conducive neighborhood for finding kid-friendly, indoor activities. I stood there for a long moment, desperately trying to think of how I was going to salvage this day without having to go home. And somewhere, in the deep dark recesses of my mommy-brain, I recalled a museum – an art museum – that I had taken Chelsea and Conor to years ago. The kids had had a great time there and I had a feeling that it was nearby. I did a quick search on my phone and, sure enough, there it was – the Children’s Museum of the Arts.

That was the good news.

The not-so-good news was that they had moved – they were still downtown but now on the far west side of the city (I was all the way over on the east side). Even if I was inclined to walk I had no interest in doing so with the stroller in the rain. But I was now seeing a glimmer of hope in our soggy day.

We booted back to the car and drove over to the museum.

It was, in a word – FANTASTIC.

The old museum was housed in a crumbly old building, dark and somewhat cramped. The new space is more than triple the size, on 3 floors and filled with lots of natural light and wide open spaces.

Noah got right to work.

Flubber, anyone?

“Mommy! Big blocks!”

Knocking them down was almost as fun as stacking them back up.

There were bright bold colors and shapes everywhere you turned.

Even the sand was colored – they call it “Mars” sand.

And a mystery staircase that led up to……….

Balls!

Noah spent a good long time there.

He took the express lane back down.

There were lots of art supplies to choose from.

And a good time was had by all.

The highlight for Noah?

Yep, you could say it was a lemons-to-flubber kind of day.

We’re definitely going back.

Looks like a blast, and it looks like you had the place all to yourself. FUN!

Yes, it was strangely uncrowded – could only imagine what it’s like on a weekend!

Very sweet! This one looks much better than the last museum which I found to be dark and depressing.
