favor- “ette” friday: saipua

I love this place. And so will you.

Saipua (Finnish for “soap”) has been making beautiful, hand-made soaps and candles since 1999. The soaps are made from the highest quality ingredients – food-grade oils, butters and fresh herbs – and have been a favorite of mine for years. As they are wrapped in unusual, lovely papers they make  great gifts too.

In the past I’ve ordered my soaps and candles on-line. What I didn’t know was that they have an actual storefront in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Hello? Red Hook? I’m there!

Chelsea and I were planning a trip to some of our other favorite Red Hook locales one day last summer (remember them? and these?) so I dropped Saipua a line to see if they would be open, as I was dying to see the place. As it turned out they were closed that day but offered to let us take a peek while we were in the neighborhood.

Asheley and Deanna greeted us at the door, and the shop was just as I envisioned it. Tiny, charming and packed with fresh flowers, soaps and candles.

In addition, they also sell a small but well-curated assortment of unusual gift items and vintage goodies that are as lovely as they are beautifully displayed.

I scooped up some soaps (the gardener’s soap is my very fave) and candles – some for me and some to put away for gifts.

Here are some photos of our visit – click here for the full slide show.

Happy Friday!

    Hi Sheri,
As usual, loved this favor-ette Fri. post! Maybe a future post could be a compilation of great places to go in Red Hook, something along the lines of “2 Perfect Days in Red Hook”? For a midwestern transplant who, sadly, has never been to Brooklyn, I think that would be great! A thought.:-)

What a beautiful store! It looks like the kind of place where you walk in and wish you could exchange lives so that everyday you would be the one opening the doors for customers. The soap papers are gorgeous and the graphics so cool.
