east 7th street

Late last year an article in the New York Times caught my eye – I cut it out and filed it in my “things I need to do” folder. The article was a virtual “walking tour” of a 6-block stretch of East 7th Street in New York City.

Although I spend quite a bit of time in Manhattan, I hardly ever find myself in the East Village. Although it has always held some appeal (and mystique) for me, I wasn’t familiar enough with the terrain to venture over there, and away from neighborhoods that I knew quite well. I enjoyed the article because it highlighted not only interesting stores and eateries but also some of the more unusual buildings and other things I love to discover, like “secret gardens”. I filed it away for warmer days, and earlier this summer Chelsea and I spent a morning (article in hand) on East 7th Street.

Just as the article described, there was a great mix of old and new – in almost every category – and we had a great day shopping, strolling and of course, eating.

Here are some photos of our day (click the links below to learn more):

Where we started.

Cooper Union, both the old……

……and new.

A mosaic street post.

Lots of early 20th century architecture…….

……..next to brand new buildings……

…….like the aptly named Flowerbox Building.

Butter Lane Cupcakes

Sea salt and caramel – HELLOOOOOOO!

Choose the frosting for your cupcake, or

skip the cupcake altogether.

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up.

And look what’s coming – right next door!!

Loved this private house with “secret garden”……

…….as well as the Sam and Sadie Koenig garden, with a sculpture by Kiki Smith.

Tokio 7, a quirky consignment shop.

Like, robot-sculpture-made-from-motorcycle-parts-and-scrap-metal quirky.

Chelsea scooped up 2 Marc Jacobs pieces while I spotted this dress with cute back detail.

Score.

And here’s the link to the article – have fun!

    Sheri,
I’m seriously into your blog! I thought you’d like to see this post I wrote on my blog of my favorite vintage shop on E. 7th Street. The East Village has been my hang out for years, but this store has been my staple for the last 3 or so. BTW, if you like my blog, please follow. I’ll do the same for yours, of course.
